Warning signs

When to seek urgent medical care for flu sufferers:

Children: fast breathing or trouble breathing, bluish skin color, not drinking enough fluids, not waking up or not interacting, being so irritable that the child does not want to be held, flulike symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough, or fever with a rash.

Adults: difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, or severe or persistent vomiting.

A common cold: The flu differs from the common cold, a respiratory infection also caused by viruses. For example, people with colds rarely get fevers or headaches or suffer from the extreme exhaustion that flu viruses cause.

State health officials say the H1N1 flu may be peaking in Virginia and could now start to decline.

Swine-flu vaccine continues in short supply, emergency rooms are being flooded with sick and worried people, hospitals are restricting visitation, and school absenteeism is running well above normal in the state.

The proportion of visits to emergency rooms and urgent-care centers attributed to suspected influenza reached 14.2 percent in Virginia this week, the state health commissioner said, a record high rate and double that of the past two flu seasons.

"We're hoping that we may be approaching the top of the curve," Dr. Karen Remley said yesterday during a media teleconference.

After reaching 14 percent to 15 percent of emergency-care visits, officials said, the potentially deadly H1N1 virus's impact appears to be abating in states that saw an earlier onset of the disease than Virginia.

"We have a peak now," Remley cautioned. "We don't know how many peaks there may be."

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said H1N1 influenza is as prevalent now as during the winter peak of regular flu seasons. Swine flu has resulted in more than 1,000 deaths so far, the CDC said yesterday. Nearly 100 pediatric swine-flu deaths have been reported.

Each year in the U.S., an average of 36,000 people die from flu-related complications and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related causes.

Virginia's supply of swine-flu vaccine is far smaller than needed to inoculate high-risk individuals, much less the entire population, officials said.

More than 3.5 million people fit in the groups with the highest need for the vaccine, the health commissioner said, while the state has received fewer than 400,000 doses.

"There's such a mismatch right now," Remley said.

The Richmond City Health District's immunization clinic boomed to overflowing this week, said district spokesman George Jones, and the clinic was almost out of H1N1 vaccine by its close yesterday. Staff members expect to round up enough vaccine for pregnant women and front-line health-care workers at Monday's immunization clinic, he said.

No vaccination site in the state has received all the vaccine it asked for, Remley said, "and many have not received any."

Unlike the other nine people who have died of H1N1-related causes in Virginia, 6-year-old Heaven Wilson of Amelia County had no underlying complications that put her at high risk from the disease, officials said.

However, Remley said, "the virus has not demonstrated any change in its infectivity or severity."

Young people are especially susceptible to the H1N1 virus. Though not all caused by illness, public school absenteeism rates reported in central Virginia were running at 5 percent to 8 percent, state figures show, and Amelia County's was 16.4 percent for the week ending Oct. 17.

Influenza is a respiratory infection caused by a variety of flu viruses. Symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have vomiting and diarrhea.

The infection produces inflammation of the lungs and respiratory tract, leading to viral pneumonia. Pneumonia builds up fluid in the lungs that makes breathing harder, blood pressure can drop and, robbed of oxygen, other organs start to fail.

Secondary infections, such as bacterial pneumonia, can occur.

"A lot of the time, it's the secondary infection that gets you," said Dr. Marsh Cuttino with HCA Virginia Health Systems. "Everything starts going wrong. . . . That's when you die."

"Prevention isn't just about preventing disease, it's about preventing complications," said Dr. Mark Levine, Virginia's deputy health commissioner. "It's about acting when you're really sick."

Randy: Fair enough. And if it’s any consolation, I know how you feel. I felt the same way the 8 years George W Bush was in office.

MrCobray: When GWB was President myself and others who disagreed with the president’s policies were called unpatriotic, unamerican, and “with the terrorists.“ Name calling comes from both sides my friend. Judging by your post, I find it hard to believe you felt dissent was OK from 2000-2008.

Personally I think dissent is great no matter what party is in power. It keeps everyone in check. And I don’t like Liberal news, or Conservative news. Unfortunately, there really isn’t any one place to get news these days that isn’t one or the other, or just shock entertainment (CNN).

I think Randy said it best below when he referred to name calling as an “excuse to divest oneself of a conversation that requires more than a sound bite of intellect to participate in.“

There’s way too much sound bite/talking point quoting on both sides when so much real info is just a quick Google search away.

Grizz - Simply because I disagree with Barack Obama - you can call it hard line, that’s fair, does not mean I’m a hater. That’s like saying that because you like kids, you’re a pedophile. He’s my president and I strongly disagree with him = but hate him? Nah. That takes up too much time and energy - I don’t let people like him rent that kind of space in my head.

Why is everyone talking about “Obama”, hating, not hating?  I thought this article was about the swine flu in VA, and elsewhere.

Grizzman…. I find your post to be very interesting.  For those who dare to speak out, we are referred to as “Obama Haters”.  I thought decent in this country was OK, until I started hearing how Obama and the White House wanted to delete Fox News as being a News Organization.

I am trying to figure this out, and maybe you can help me…  When Pres. Bush was in office… What were the Liberal Democrats saying about Bush with all the name calling?  How about what MSNBC with Keith Oberman and the other Liberal News Media were saying about Pres. Bush… AND let’s not forget MoveOn.org.

Did you speak out by calling them “Bush Haters” at that time, or were their comments and name calling fine to you?  Final note:  Just to let you know… I do not hate Obama, as I NEVER met the man.  I just hate his policies and what he represents and I do not like what he is doing to this country….  Remember, decent in this country is OK without being refered to as a “Obama Hater” by you.

I’m not saying I approved of either the Bush or Obama stimulus plans. We can argue whether or not they worked until we’re blue in the face, but the fact remains that a large majority of economists are declaring the recession near over. So it’s hard to argue the stimulus hurt.

Also, it’s been predicted since long before Obama’s stimulus package that unemployment rate reduction would lag a few months after the end of the recession, but conservatives just love to keep serving that one up.

Lastly, I’ve seen a consistent hardline anti-Obama stance in all your posts.  So don’t get upset when someone calls you an Obama hater. That’s what you come off as to me too, and I’m not at all referring to race.

Grizz - I have to give you credit, you’ve got faith.

Yes, how dare the president spend our money to buy automakers and GIVE the unions ownership while screwing creditors. How dare the president do a tax payer funded stimulus package to head of unemployment at 8% but it falls on its face and goes to 9.8%.

Yeah, grizz, how dare he be so reactionary and myopic that his “bold actions” don’t work. He can pay for government health care by simply reducing waste? Why not reduce waste first and see if the money’s there?

Yeah, how dare he try to do something smart for a change?

I know, how dare our president spend money on a crisis or emergency. Better he just ignores it and maybe it will quietly go away.

I think I had Kool-aid on my mind as I was scared to death of taking it… I meant to say my message was not approved by BO and the White House Team in the previous message.  lol

I am NOT taking this shot…. since Obama recommened it, I than know it is full of “Kool-Aid”.
