Community college sponsors environmental fair
An auction of repurposed home items - bird feeders made from fruit crates and quilts stitched out of old blue jeans - will be part of a free community environmental fair tomorrow at John Tyler Community College.
Revive Green Initiative: Community Challenge and Fool for Art Silent Auction will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at John Tyler's Midlothian campus on Charter Colony Parkway.
The celebration, sponsored by the college and Chesterfield County, will raise money for student scholarships.
Events include:
- The silent auction of homemade recycled items, on display in the administration building, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Free classes on topics from flower-pressing and underwater photography to blogging and fashion sketching.
- Arts and crafts from more than 85 contributors.
- Book signing with Karen Gammon, author of "Dogs and Cats With Tales."
- A "Celebrate Our Earth" tent of activities that will include erupting a volcano, digging for dinosaurs and making recycled paper.
- Talks on topics from broadcast meteorology to healthy pregnancy.
- Free document shredding.
- Music by Chesterfield County students.
- Food vendors, drinks, free henna tattoos and an eco-energy test.
