Raising funds for Rett syndrome

WHAT'S HAPPENING

The Jepson Alumni Center at the University of Richmond was the setting Feb. 27 for the "Boilin' Good Time" benefit for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

An 18-wheeler that acted as a rolling billboard welcomed guests as they arrived. Once inside the center, the more than 250 participants were treated to an evening of cocktails and low-country fare. A raffle and silent and live auctions led by Benefit Auction Specialists of Manassas tempted and entertained throughout the evening.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of Dr. Carolyn Schanen, head of the Human Genetics Research Lab at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. Schanen was honored for her research contributions to the study of Rett syndrome.

"American Idol" season seven finalist Angela Martin thrilled the audience with the Bryan Adams song "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You."

Kathryn Schanen Kissam, foundation chairwoman and sister of Dr. Schanen, remarked, "Within minutes of Angela's 'Idol' success, and with news of her daughter Jessica's struggles with [Rett syndrome] reaching television audiences, our phone began ringing off the hook. Clearly, Angela is a valuable spokesperson for our cause, encouraging people to get involved and to make a difference."

Rett syndrome is a genetic, neurological condition that occurs almost exclusively in girls. Its symptoms result in lifelong disabilities including loss of speech, mobility and hand use.

The Richmond event raised more than $150,000.
