Children benefiting children

WHAT'S HAPPENING
More than 300 young dancers from all over Virginia combined their talents for the Virginia Dance Festival to benefit Children's Hospital of Richmond.
Dancer and teacher Jessica Morgan hosted the event Jan. 31 at James River High School in Chesterfield County. Her vision of children helping children was inspired 10 years ago when one of her students became seriously ill and was cared for at Children's Hospital.
"It is our hope by raising money for Children's Hospital, that it will help those children overcome their physical challenges and have opportunities to develop their own talents," Morgan said.
Students from more than 30 studios showcased a variety of dance styles. Participants included the Latin Ballet of Virginia, Appomattox Regional Governor's School, Swift Creek Academy of the Performing Arts, West End Academy, Dance Trance, Dragonfly Dance Experiment, and the School of the Richmond Ballet.
Lite 98 radio personality Kat Simon served as master of ceremonies. A silent auction, organized by Donna Puryear, Tracy Francis and Michelle Schappacher, included items such as themed gift baskets, jewelry, gift certificates, Virginia Tech memorabilia and a Buffalo Bills football autographed by Jim Kelly.
The festival is a family affair for Morgan. Her husband, Glenn, working backstage, is "her chief Mr. Fix-it and go-fer," as he puts it. Daughter Vanessa, a dancer and graphic designer, is in charge of publications and their special-event T-shirt.
This year's event raised more than $10,000. The festival's 10-year donation total for the Children's Hospital Foundation is well over $100,000.
