Collegiate School set a record for fundraising during the past academic year, said Alex Smith, vice president for development.

The K-12 independent coeducational day school received $13.8 million in donations during the 2008-09 academic year. This represents an increase of $750,000 from the previous year and the largest amount raised in a single year since the school was founded in 1915.

Collegiate received $1.4 million through its annual giving campaign. The remaining $12.4 million largely was designated to the Centennial Capital Campaign, which has raised $37 million toward a first-phase goal of $54 million. The centennial campaign supports Collegiate's 182-acre athletic complex on the Robins Campus in Goochland County and a new Academic Commons/Library on the Mooreland Campus in Henrico County.

Christmas came in July and brought more than $2,000 worth of gifts for CCHASM, the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Alliance For Social Ministry.

About 60 bags of groceries were collected through the Christmas in July event at Chester Baptist Church, which featured Joe Stankus as Santa and offered activities for children. People also donated about $500 in cash.

The donations support 13 food pantries that receive referrals from CCHASM. "In the summer, it's really hard," said CCHASM Director Sharon Juozapavicius. Families need more food because free breakfast and lunch programs aren't available at schools during summer break. Donations also tend to slow down when people go on vacation, she said. "I think it was a good event."
