Two men die in separate Va. traffic accidents
A Chesapeake man died yesterday from injuries he suffered in a two-car crash on Tuesday.
William Patrick Simmons, 21, was a passenger in a car that was traveling north on Interstate 664, about two-tenths of a mile south of Joliff Road in Chesapeake, when it struck a disabled vehicle parked on the shoulder at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday.
Simmons, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, died the next morning at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk.
Virginia State Police also reported a fatal crash in Pittsylvania County on Sunday.
Timothy Layne Simms, 43, of Danville was a passenger in a pickup truck that was traveling south on the U.S. 29 Bypass, three-tenths of a mile north of U.S. 360, when the tire on the rear driver side lost its tread. The truck entered the median, flipped three times and came to rest on the shoulder of the northbound lane against the guardrail at 7:03 p.m.
Police said Simms, who was wearing a seat belt, died at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Their deaths brought the number of people killed on state highways this year to 90, compared with 124 at the same date last year.
