UPDATE: Pilot killed, daughter injured in Lake Anna crash
A homemade, two-seat aircraft crashed into Lake Anna this afternoon, killing the pilot and injuring the man’s 17-year-old daughter.
Virginia State Police said Edward B. Toth, 46, died when the single-engine Maxair Drifter apparently lost power and crashed 100 yards offshore into Lake Anna in Louisa County about 1 p.m.
Records associated with the plane’s registration number shows that it was manufactured in 2003. The Federal Aviation Administration was expected at the crash site this evening.
The crash site is 100 yards off Carrs Bridge Road and a few miles south of the North Anna nuclear power station near Dike 1 on the lake’s southern shore.
Toth kept the fixed-wing aircraft at the Tappahannock airport where retired aircraft engineer Howard Patterson said Toth “loved to take kids up for rides. He had pontoons on the plane so he could land on water.”
Patterson said the plane had a range of 200 to 300 miles and carried 15 gallons of gasoline. He said airport records did not indicate when Toth, who was known as Ted, took off from the airport.
Toth’s 17-year-old daughter was being treated this evening at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. The state medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death for her father.
