Training center undergoing expansion

Construction is under way on the expansion of a Department of Juvenile Justice training center in Chesterfield County.

The 5,400-square-foot addition to the Cedar Lodge Training Facility, which is the primary training center for the Department of Juvenile Justice, will include a multi-purpose room to provide more training space for officers, said Bruce Twyman, a department spokesman.

While training is also held at other facilities, Cedar Lodge is used when officers need more extensive training, Twyman said. Construction on the training facility is scheduled to be completed in February 2010, he said.

Cedar Lodge is on Old Bon Air Road in Chesterfield and adjoins the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, the Oak Ridge Reception and Diagnostic Center and the Oak Ridge Juvenile Correctional Center.

The Bon Air correctional facility, which originally opened in May 1910 as a school for females, is on Chatsworth Avenue near Old Bon Air Road. In fiscal year 2008, 231 juveniles were placed at the facility. -- Jeremy Slayton
