After receiving more than 6,000 entries, including duplications, the front office of Richmond's Double-A baseball franchise has selected five finalists.

Flatheads. Flying Squirrels. Hambones. Rock Hoppers. Rhinos.

The Richmond team will adopt one of those names, all offered by the public in a name-the-team contest. The winner will be announced by Oct. 15. The franchise encourages online voting for one of the final five. The choice of the front office will be influenced by public input, according to Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Todd Parnell, but the winner will not necessarily be the top vote-getter.

The franchise's front office liked the five finalists for these reasons, according to Parnell:

Flatheads: a kind of catfish commonly found in the James River.

Flying Squirrels: soar in Virginia.

Hambones: paying homage to Virginia ham.

Rock Hoppers: people or animals on river rocks.

Rhinos: alliteration featuring a powerful image.

Each finalist received trademark clearance, and approval from Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball. In terms of marketing potential, "every single one of these has a life of its own," said Parnell, who added that team operators will be satisfied with any of the five candidates.

Of the five original offerings, Rhinos was by far the best though not necessarily Richmond-related (which is fine).  It’s a great mascot, I don’t know of any other Rhino teams, and it’s tough!  Rockfish is the best of the late suggestions, what a cool fish!  Hush Puppies???? Really?  can we just forfeit all the games ahead of time?  My too-late suggestion is Richmond Wraiths - pretty cool, ghosts of history, civil war and all that which relate to Richmond’s distinct place in history, and it’s tough/scary and a good mascot and logo.  Plus it’s an “R” sound without actually starting with an R.

in ref. to the names sub. i got to thinking of the old days of baseball here in ric. iwas around when rich. colts were here but too young to rem. them. i do rem. the vees.iwas all excited about being the yanks. farm team.every year we,d have a parade down brd.st. mickey mantle, whitey ford, and many others. i can still see mantle hit that home run over the ctr.field fence and landing on herm.rd(as legend has it).rich.had some pretty good players come through town, tom tresh, deron johnon, and some others.the names the teams had buff.bisons, syracuse chiefs, havana sugar kings, and many more. then the braves came to town in 66. we really had our share of bad ones .i can remember going out there and youcouldnt change atire with the crowd there.we did have some pretty good players, dale murphy, tom house, and of course tommy aaron. since, the mid 90s i dont get to many ball games, dont really care much for the players of today ,they get a hang nail and cant play. i will try and make a few games this coming season, and wish them well whatever their names are. boy do i miss the old days

How about Richmond RAGE, or Richmond Rythym?

The other names are pretty bad!

This has passed the realm of ridiculous!

None of the names are suitable for a baseball team located in the City of Richmond.

There are other names I could suggest but the post would get thrown out and I would have my hands spanked.

However, I have one, The Richmond Protectors.

As good or better than the ones the owners have suggested!

I believe the true Richmond people that have built this city should be a big influence of this name picking. This is who we are! The outsider that comes to Richmond does not have the insight as we do. The five names chosen is a mockery to true Richmond people.  True Richmond people let’s stand as one. Let true Richmond people come together and chose our name. There is power in numbers!  Richmond rules!

I like an earlier suggestion - the Richmond Rockfish. The name conveys energetic strength and fun.

I really want to think that these names were put out there to see if anyone was paying attention.

I saw on WTVR that they had a poll that gave “Anything Else” as an option and it was winning with about 80% of the votes.
