Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. strongly defended the economic stimulus package today, telling an audience at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College that it has saved the economy.
"I'm absolutely, positively confident we are on the right track," he said of the $787 million package.
Biden addressed a crowd of about 140 community college students and invited guests.
Biden, joined onstage by Richmond Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood, also announced a $1.59 million law enforcement grant for the city of Richmond.
Without naming names, Biden appeared to taunt Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, for criticizing the stimulus package while favoring the use of stimulus money for high-speed rail.
In a conference call with reporters earlier this afternoon, Cantor criticized President Barack Obama's stimulus package as a failed government program that hasn't delivered on its promise to create more jobs.
Biden next heads to a private fundraiser in Henrico for state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, the Democratic nominee for governor.
Reader Reactions
The Republicans lead us into the abyss to a point that banks need dizzying bailouts (again!), cornerstone industries need bailouts, and the new administration is told by every economist out there that without massive stimulus spending the entire capitalistic economy will collapse and you dopes are goofing on Biden?
Would you honestly prefer Palin.
REALLY?
I want to thank all of those who have already sent their credit card numbers to my website, http://www.iamabankruptfool.net I’m already nearly out of debt having spent your money while being sure to send a sizeable percentage it to the wife of a former general in Nigeria who left behind a large stash of gold but needs some funds to tide her over. It is soooo good to spend other peoples’ money to meet my own needs. I should have followed the VP’s advice much sooner.
If you believe “we must spend money in order to avoid bankruptcy” send me your credit card information at this website: http://www.iamabankruptfool.net
Of course being a sensitive liberal, you may wish to finish up helping out those folks in Nigeria you’ve been sending money to first.
Sorry that I am not politically correct. However my comments continue to disappear even without vulgarity!
Must be the rich and powerful Virginia Education Association complaining to have other people’s opinions deleted.
Why else would my posts from earlier today be gone?
If anyone would like, I can repost them.
No Republican in the House voted for the so called “stimulus package” signed by Obama. Eric Cantor is the Republican Whip who rallied the entire GOP to vote against the bill.
We have to spend money to avoid bankruptcy!
That is what the stimulus was supposed to do, theoretically.
So much for theory.
We now have the catastrophe that Obama
vowed the stimulus would avert.
So much for promises.
Biden is the court jester of an administration comprised of the gang that couldn’t shoot straight.
Hey - don’t pegme -
Nice catch - it’s a factory!
So What????????
Neat trick. The TARP has ‘saved the economy’, but they haven’t spent 90% of it. Saaayyyyyy—Joe—if it’s working so well, then why do you need the rest of the money?
Hey RTD, Why do you seem to have three, or four articles stating about the same thing on the same subject? It’s not very conducive to commenting. HAHAHAH
