Bon Secours to build $30 million center in Chesterfield
Bon Secours said today it will build a $30 million ambulatory care campus at Watkins Centre in western Chesterfield County.
The nonprofit Catholic health system will build the center at the southwest corner of state Route 288 and Midlothian Turnpike, across from the Westchester Commons shopping center and about 4.5 miles from Bon Secours St. Francis Medial Center. It will create 100 new jobs.
The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2011, said Kevin Barr, spokesman for Bon Secours.
It will consist of 100,000 square feet of space the includes a free-standing emergency department, a comprehensive diagnostic imaging center and a physician medical office building for primary care, obstetrics and gynecology and physician practices.
"We have had a very high level of interest from physician groups that want to be located there," Barr said.
Plans for the second phase are still under development. It will include additional health care services and physician office space, Barr said.
"Bon Secours is always looking at development zones in the Richmond region and it chose to expand at this site because of the concentration of economic development activity there."

Interested Read – We are as concerned about our local economy as you are. As of September 2009, Richmond reported 6.7% unemployment (which is less than the national rate of 9%). Many of these new jobs will draw recent graduates and those with skilled medical backgrounds. Our goal is always to help further reduce our local unemployment rate, not contribute to it. Would you agree that regardless of the wording, this facility will provide important and needed services to our community? We are listening and hope you will continue to connect with us – did you know you can find us on twitter.com/bonsecoursrva or email us directly at

Bababooey – Thank you for your kind words. We strive to continue to earn our place in the Richmond community.
Mjl81702 – We also agree that east of Richmond is an important and growing part of our community. We will share your feedback with our leadership.
Hospital systems need to invest in their existing facilities.
For Bon Secours, the MRMC facility is a farce…it is short-staffed, the staff that is there is stretched to far and does not provide adequate care for patients.
The medical community needs to understand the concept of customer service…patients are not an interruption of their work but the source of their paychecks. We need to demand more.
With this additional building and the “creation of 100 jobs,“ means more vacancies at the other facilities. No wonder our health care costs are rising!
Much duplication of services. Really, a “free standing” ER? What if someone were to need a REAL ER, much time wasted in getting there from this new facility.
This is NOT an ER; it’s an immediate care center. Call it what it is.
I agree with the other poster; that area needs medical facilities, too. Hint, hint, is someone listening?
Bon Secours is a very great asset for the Richmond area. I live relatively near the proposed area of development and look forward to Bon Secours expanding their services in Midlothian.
This is great for that area. My question is when is someone going to build something in the growing eastern part of Henrico County and western New Kent? As it is now we have to go all the way to Memorial or down to Williamsburg of Tidewater. Seems to me they are missing out on a large and growing part of the area that they could be sole provider for.
