Kaine tells agency heads to seek further spending cuts
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has instructed heads of state agencies to seek ways to further reduce spending, given financial estimates that show state revenues have dipped below revised budget projections.
Kaine, speaking to reporters at the state Capitol, said April revenues would fall below estimates.
He said current economic trends are likely to leave the state up to $225 million short of revenue needed to balance Virginia's budget through the end of fiscal 2009, which ends June 30.
The governor said there is still an $160 million in unallocated funds for fiscal 2010 that could be applied to the new shortfall, mitigating the new cuts.
"We're telling them that they need to be austere," Kaine said.

Kaine mentioned the 160 million from next years budget? Then given the extreme accuracy of his budget projectors that will just make next years budget that much more short.
Kaine doesn’t get it. Never has. His grand social spending plans mostly are down the drain given the economic woes of the Commonwealth and nation.
That’s what we get for electing the ultra liberal socialist democrats.
Instead of asking how the Commonwealth can do more with less by making state government more efficient at the tasks it currently performs and using the savings to pay for new programs, the more responsible approach to governing asks the question, how do we do less with less by decreasing the scope of state government, streamlining programs, and returning savings to the taxpayers? What are the chances of our Governor employing the latter strategy?
dswx: It’s the STATE budget we are talking about. I was being facetious which in one of those big words that people who take themselves too seriously don’t understand.
If you haven’t figured it out by now all dswx posting attack Bush/Cheney. he has no other cause for the problems that we are experiencing. Everything ahs been created in the last 8 years. Nothing before that.
Do tell, dswx, as to how Dave’s quote, your assertion of ‘Bingo’, and the story at hand tie together. Please enlighten us. Try to keep it specific, if you could.
This seems to be a very orderly, thoughtful process. If further cost savings can be found before the end of this FY, it puts less pressure on next year’s contingency fund.
“It’s the past 8 years of Bush/Hitler and Darth Cheney that are causing all this.“
Bingo. Basic economics. If you think a few months is all it takes to restore the long-term damage done by Shrub and Cheney (without a doubt the worst administration ever), you really do not have a clue about budgets and how government works. But admitting the cause of the problem is the first step.
So according to the article there is $160 that COULD be applied but he is not going to do that. When is the Governor going to tell us the truth about the financial mess this state is in? It seems every 2 or 3 months we are hearing about more cuts due to projections being off. Fire the people who are making these projections and get someone in there who can tell us exactly what is needed for the next 2 years. Or are the projections off because of NEW programs voted on by the General Assembly. I am glad I do not run my house like this. Democrats are running us to the poor house. Or are you going to continue to blame the previous administration. Oh wait he was a Democrat, too.
It would have helped if he had told them that in the first place. Let me guess. It’s the past 8 years of Bush/Hitler and Darth Cheney that are causing all this.
