Richmond region prepares for 2010 census

The first step to make the 2010 census as accurate as possible is being taken.

Actually, it's quite a few steps.

In the Richmond area, temporary workers for the U.S. Census Bureau will walk street to street beginning April 13 to verify addresses in preparation for next year's population count.

The canvassing has started in other areas and is set to conclude by mid-July.

"A complete and accurate address list is the basis of a good census," bureau spokeswoman Katie B. Cody said. "Every accurate address increases the chance that [a completed survey] will get sent back."

About 1,200 workers are being sent out from the Richmond office, which for now is responsible for a 43-locality area, stretching from Hanover County to the north, Mecklenburg County to the south, Hampton Roads to the east and Goochland County to the west.

. . .

The workers will carry census badges and bags, as well as -- for the first time -- hand-held computers equipped with a global positioning system to map addresses.

In some instances, workers may approach residents to verify the address and whether there are other dwellings on the property, Cody said.

The Census Bureau is working from an address list compiled from various sources, including the 2000 census, the U.S. Postal Service and local, state and tribal governments.

Across the country, an estimated 8 million addresses have been added since 2000, and more than 3.2 million housing units are estimated in Virginia. The Census Bureau will be working with local governments to pick up the addresses of homes, apartments or other dwellings that are occupied after this year's sweep.

Once the addresses are checked, residents can expect:

  • Surveys will be mailed next March so they can be completed and returned. The 2010 census is intended to provide a snapshot of the country as of April 1, 2010. All households will receive a 10-question survey that should take 10 minutes to complete.

  • Beginning in May 2010, a larger wave of workers will begin following up with households from which completed surveys weren't received.

  • A report on the census to be presented to President Barack Obama by Dec. 31, 2010. It is unclear when data will be released publicly.

The census, conducted every 10 years, is used to apportion seats in the House of Representatives and to distribute billions in federal aid to state and local governments. With so much at stake, it's important to make sure addresses are as accurate as possible, Cody said.

"This is really the first major operation of the census, when people are going to be on the street," she said.

Jimmy Carter Jr. ( aka BHO ) along with the corrupt Congress is already breaking with the U.S. Constitution on this. You can bet your mortgage that data will favor the dems. By using estimates instead of direct counts they will balloon the count for all the demographics that do as they are told come election day.

I didn’t say anything about Obama or his public policy or whether I agree with it. I just think its crazy to say that acorn will be responsible for changing census numbers or that the census, something that has to be done every ten years, would be used “in order to further Obama’s socilaist agenda” That sounds somewhat paranoid. My point is that the nation would be in much better shape if this cry for government transparency by conservatives occured years ago, not just now that the opposition is in office.

rva - Let’s agree that you don’t like George W. Bush. I know, he just drives you nuts along with Fox News and Rush Limbaugh (you guys really obsess on them). Yes, that cabal really gets you to screaming, tearing your hair out and makes you eat mud. It’s so bad, you have to see a specialist because now your grinding your teeth and cutting yourself.

Is it REALLY your position that it is o.k. to have a new president who is weak on the economy and weak on national security and weak on international affairs just because you hated the last 8 years. I mean, you and the rest of the Obama supplicants were supposed to be leaving the same old tired policies of the past behind for something new, some change and some hope - but, it seems that all that Obama can do is keep looking in the rear view mirror and blame stuff on George W. Bush.

Some “Yes, we can” this turned out to be.

rva… don’t try to use the liberal lines to tell us Obama has the answers for protecting our country from terrorism. He clearly doesn’t think terrorism is a big problem. If he did he’d call it s “War on Terror” (which it is) instead of that administrative gobbledygook he’s calling it now.

Obama doesn’t take foreign threats seriously because he has no clue on foreign policy. He thinks we can Kumbaya the NKs into giving up nuclear weapons. The Bush people at least understood that if they can get into our nation and blow up half of Manhattan once, they can do it again unless we take measures to stop it. Obama doesn’t even get that!

Biden hit it right on the head when he said we’d be tested with Obama in charge. The NKs are testing us to see if we’ll do anything more than whine to the UN. THey know we won’t, and so does every American who is concerned about our freedom. We know Obama isn’t, and yes, that does make intelligent people worry. The libs like you don’t worry because you want to make friends with bin Laden et al. Intelligent people know he’ll shake your right hand while trying to put a grenade in your left.

rva: Darned right I felt safer under the Bush administration. I didn’t worry that 12 of the top 52 Bin Laden terrorists were out there plottng the next attack unchecked while the leader of the free world was busy making appearanes on the Tonight Show. Or that everything I’ve worked for was going to be “redistributed” to a bunch of slackards.  Or that as it got progressively worse, I wouldn’t even be able to pray publicly about it unless I was Muslim.

And by the way, in addition to NBC and CNN, I do indeed watch Fox because they are the only network who doesn’t cater to the Annointed One. But I wasn’t the only one up early - your “everything is Bush’s fault” post appeared immediately after mine. Typical Omaba worshipper response: when you can’t think of an intelligent rebuttal, just harp on Bush again. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Somehow the comments about the 2010 census story and some other story must have been mixed up, since none of the letetrs seem to have anything to do with the main subject!  People, the US Government requires a head count of all residents of the US every 1 years, period.  While it does seem to me that a literaly army of folks are being sent out on the street, the last time we had a census serious undercounting in urban areas occured.  Remember when the City of Richmond actually had more active utility Bill accounts than the number of people counted?  At that time the US the government said that didn’t mean anything.  At least a big effort is being made to count everyone…homeless or not so just maybe cities can get some resources to get some people off the street vs. begging for money.  I think some of you need to turn the radio off and start thinking logically for yourselves!

I see the Fox News crowd has posted comments early today. Really like the comment about being “afraid for my country and the welfare of my children” Did this happen recently? Have you been living under a rock for the past 8 years? I mean boy I sure felt better under the very truthful and transparent Bush administration, they never “fudged” any numbers or intelligence reports for political gain.

drhoagie is absolutely right. Beyond being a colossal waste of time and money, this is scary. “It is unclear when data will be released publicly.“ I’ll tell you when: when ACORN has had enough time to fudge the figures in order to further Obama’s socilaist agenda. Look for more seats for the democrats and more funding for his pet social programs. I have never been more afraid for my country and the welfare of my children than I am under the dicatorship of the Annointed One.

The illegals don’t need to be accounted for.  The fact remains that they are here and get more entitlements than the rest of us who actually pay taxes. VA has its fair share, with VA Beach even dubbed a “sanctuary city”. Isn’t that special.
