Chesterfield gets some nasal flu vaccine

Dr. William R. Nelson, director of the Chesterfield Health District, said Chesterfield County's health department has received a limited supply of nasal flu vaccine.

He encouraged people who are at high risk for the illness to get the vaccine and asked those who are less vulnerable to wait.

The vaccine is being administered at the health department at 9501 Lucy Corr Circle in the county government complex. Because the supply is limited, Nelson said, people should call ahead to check for availability at (804) 768-7499.

Because additional shipments of vaccine have not arrived, vaccination clinics in schools have been postponed for the rest of this week, and those scheduled for next week tentatively have been postponed, too, he said.

A definite decision will be made today, he said.

"We're very disappointed that the [vaccine] shipments have not arrived in the timeliness and [in amounts] that we expected," he said.

At vaccine clinics around the county Monday, parents reported long waits for their children to be vaccinated.

Complaints were made that adults were being vaccinated along with students at the clinics, and health officials announced that the county's entire initial supply -- 1,320 doses -- was used that night. -- Juan Lizama
