CUMBERLAND -- Cumberland Sheriff Darrell Hodges announced today that investigators have arrested a suspect in a double homicide over the weekend.

Tyrone Tyree Roads, 21, of Powhatan was arrested without incident in Richmond.

Roads has been charged with capital murder in connection with the slayings of Ricky Thurston and Barry Shaver, whose bodies were found Saturday night in the yard of a Cartersville-area residence, Hodges said.

Hodges said a knife may have been used in the attacks, but a cause of death was not immediately released.

A motive was not disclosed but Hodges said he believes the victims knew their attacker.

Commonwealth's Attorney Pat Scales said Roads was being held without bond.

Cumberland authorities said they worked with State Police, the Richmond Police Department and the Powhatan Sheriff's Office on the case, and credited the community for its assistance in providing information.

Actually, if you got a speeding ticket and had a good record (say if you were a “first offender” speeder), you could go to driving school and have it erased from your record. If the court system locked up every person who was arrested for possession of drugs, we would need a jail on every corner. The man is charged with capital murder, for which he could receive the death penalty; I don’t think he was worried about the year hanging over his head for a drug conviction when and if he committed this crime.

I think the point was that this guy got “nothing” for his drug possession.  He was basically sent home and told to “behave” for a year and all would be forgiven.  Gee.. wonder if I get a speeding ticket whether I will get to have it waived if I don’t get caught speeding for the next year?  um.. nahh I have a job and can afford to pay a fine..  This guy was going to cost the state money to put in jail. so they let him go and crossed their fingers that he would play nice.  Looks like he made the year… The murders were just over a year later.. wonder if he waited.

I am not completely sure I understand the point of the comment posted below- that we are supposed to hold anyone arrested for a minor drug crime for life out of the unreasonable fear they may one day commit a violent crime?
