NORFOLK -- Down in the polls and short on cash, gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds is now running as an Obama Democrat.
Deeds, hoping to energize his campaign in the closing week of the Virginia race, joined President Barack Obama this afternoon at a rally at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.
The event was targeted at many of the first-time voters who helped tip Virginia to Obama last year.
Obama told the audience at ODU's Ted Constant Convocation Center to ignore the polls and pull out the stops for Deeds and his running mates in the last seven days of the contest.
Obama made a special pitch to his base saying "I know there are a lot of people here who came out for my campaign . . . maybe they feel a little complacent, a little cynical because we didn't change things overnight."
Obama made passing reference to the Republican front-runner, Bob McDonnell.
"We don't need people who are slick, who say one thing and do another and go back to the policies of yesteryear," he said. "They got us in trouble in the first place."
Obama continued, "we've got enough of those politicians -- we have a whole bunch in Washington D.C."
In selecting Norfolk for the president's fly-in, Democrats are targeting eastern Virginia's large number of African-American, labor and young voters -- all of whom were crucial to Obama's win last year.
Obama is the first Democrat to win Virginia for the presidency in 44 years.
Deeds, a state senator from Bath County, also waived off the latest polls.
He said, borrowing a line from Mark Twain, "reports of my demise are much exaggerated." Deeds called on Democrats to "drive out every single vote we can."
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, Obama's hand-picked chairman of the Democratic National Committee, warmed up the crowd with a prediction that Deeds would defy the polls.
"We've got to work awful hard for the next seven days," Kaine said. "We've shown them that we can surprise them."
Joining Deeds at the rally were his running mates for lieutenant governor and attorney general, Jody Wagner and Steve Shannon, respectively.

LOL AndyDandy so typical, I simply asked you questions that you couldn’t or really didn’t want to answer so you start slinging childish insults at me so common. He keeps speaking truth that I want to ignore, it’s making me mad, I’m going to start kicking and screaming against his rational truths with more bogus non-sense.
——-
I’m not on Food Stamps so not sure about that but guess you could since it is food.
——-
You want facts about the rich and taxes, Warren Buffett the 3rd richest man in the world made $47 million dollars and paid a tax percentage of 17% while his secreatry who made under $60k paid 30% ther is a fact for you.
You want some more, how about all of the wonderful tax loopholes the rich and only the rich get to take advantage of like the capital gains tax, where they get to choose to pay that rate which is roughly around 15% compared to the high earners tax rate of 35%. I love when people like you quote over-all dollar amounts but you don’t look at what percentage of their income does that make up. So what’s more difficult for someone making $40 million to pay 15% which equals $6 million or someone making $30,000 to pay 30% or $9,000 of their total income? Hmmm let me see what would be easier to live on $21,000 a year or $32,000,000.00 per year, darn I just don’t know. So get real with your misleading numbers, here is the reality for the working class.
———
As far as Obama’s millions go, here are a few more facts, Obama’s net worth is around 1.3 million, compared to Bush’s 26 million net worth, so there is a few more facts for you.
———-
Now can you not answer my questions?
How is Bob McDonnell since you are going to vote for him going to help the average working class Virginian, not corporate CEO’s or the wealthy?
If tax cuts for the rich always creates jobs, why didn’t Bush’s do the same?
Why does the working class income decline or flat line every time we have a Republican President and CEO’s income sky rockets and corporate profits double and triple? Please xplain this to me, just asking a few simple questions?

MrCobray you don’t know me so don’t label me. I work for a living.
Dandy Andy… excellant post as grich is a self proclaim “Socialist”, and you cannot talk to someone who is looking for something for FREE. Also, he is into “Big Brother knows BEST for YOU”!
Actually, gqrich, Look at the IRS figures. Look at “the rich” that you people are always jealous of, I mean complaining about. You will see that 86% of all income taxes that are paid, are paid by the top 25% of wage earners. So “the rich” are paying substantially more than the middle class. In fact, “the rich” paid a higher percentage of their income in taxes under Bush than they did under Clinton. These are facts from the IRS.
Furthermore before you continue your class envy rants against anyone who has a dollar more than you, you might want to take a minute and realize that Obama, your President, made all of his millions during the Bush administration.
I stand by my statement that a lot of the people that Obama appointed to his administration had some tax problems. Heck, the Sec. of the Treasury didn’t even file taxes for 4 years. It’s not bitter grapes, it’s a fact.
The rest of your post sounded like drunken rambling so I won’t even try to respond to your delusional rants. I provide facts…you rant and rave. That’s the difference between you and me. That’s the difference between a conservative and a liberal.
I’m curious, can you pay for popcorn with food stamps?
To all “Liberal Democrats”.... just wanted to let you know that Obama could not sell me the Swamp Land in Fla., and because of these… I WILL vote for McDonnell.
NOPE!
Oh DandyAndy, I understand about the tax rebate in the stimulus but I always get a refund so I completely understand that my refund will be a little less because I basically got a little bit of it early sort of speak. It was great to have a little now rather than at the end of the year was my point.
———-
Now unfortunately I thought we could have a reasonable discussion but there you go with the unsubstantiated horse manure: “The only people who benefited under Obama’s tax policies are his friends who never paid any taxes in the first place and he appointed to jobs in his administration.“
Too bad, sounds like petty bitter grapes to me.
—————
And to the last part, I keep looking at my post and I don’t see anywhere that I said everyone else can go to “Hades.“
I was responding to your post that said Obama was a do nothing President and that simply is not true. His policies have helped me and many other people I know and don’t know in these tough times which was the point you completely missed.
———-
So DandyAndy what do think and I am assuming here that you voted for McCain, what do you think he would have done any different and how is McDonnell going to help the average working class person in Virginia, not the super wealthy or corporate CEO’s?
Another question I would love to hear the answer to as well. Why is it every time we have a Republican President the same trend happens, corporate profits double and triple, CEO’s compensation and bonuses increase 200% but the middle class wages either decrease or flat line while cost of services and goods increase which puts the working class into a hole?
Look up the trends of salaries under Reagan, Bush and Bush II, the exact same.
Also, why is it when people like you and Republicans always talk about tax cuts these tax cuts always seem to be the biggest for the highest earners and if tax cuts as I keep hearing from Republicans create jobs, then after Bush II huge tax cut that doubled our deficit along with his completely unfunded Medicaid Prescription plan that will add 10 trillion dollars to our deficit over the next decade did our country continue to shed and bleed jobs at an alarming rate? I thought big tax cuts for the rich created jobs, what happened?
——-
I got my popcorn because this outta be a doozy.
gqrich, “With the tax cut in the stimulus I’m bringing home about $30 a month more”
I hate to be the one to break this to you, gqrich, but that was not a tax cut. All that is, is a lower tax withholding from your paycheck. When you file taxes next year, you will have to pay all that back. Didn’t you get a letter from your company explaining this to you? There was no tax cut. The only people who benefited under Obama’s tax policies are his friends who never paid any taxes in the first place and he appointed to jobs in his administration.
You went on to say, “so to answer your question, for me and my family and friends pretty darn good.“.
Well isn’t that just swell? As long as you and your friends are doing darn good, then the rest of us who have to pay for all this can just go to hades. Is that it? Who do you think is paying for all these things that you mentioned? I’ll tell you who is going to have to pay for them….your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. But I guess you with your “entitlement” mentality will tell them to go to hades too. As long as you can get your stuff, nothing else matters. Jeez…and you say the Republicans are selfish.
Deeds has not replied to a complaint I made to his campaign about the way his workers trespassed on my property against my wishes which I made while standing on my property. No response to a legitimate complaint made as a result of illegal and disrespectful behavior - no vote for Deeds. And I could tell other stories about how dishonest his campaign has been but why bother. Neither side is perfect but my personal experience with Deeds side has been very negative. To each his own.
JollyRogerX, you love corporate welfare, awesome! Yeah go grab you one of those minimum wage jobs with no benefits or the benefits are so high it takes half your huge (lol) check to cover it. Let me know how that works out for you.
DandyAndy you ask how that’s worked out for me, well let’s see. My 401k that tanked under Bush has rebounded and gained about $10,000. With the tax cut in the stimulus I’m bringing home about $30 a month more, I have friends and family that have benefitted as well. One couple I know was able to buy a home for the first time with the $8,000 home credit and a friend of mine that got laid off who has asthma was afraid because he wasn’t sure he could afford Health Care Coverage under Cobra, his cost was going to be around $340 a month but because of the stimulus he is only paying around $130 and he can afford that so he was able to keep his Health Insurance, Oh and a classmates husband was getting ready to be redeployed to Iraq but that was cancelled so he is staying home now, so to answer your question, for me and my family and friends pretty darn good.
And as far as holding him responsible for a few things, I already do, if he created it and it fails then yes, I do. For example I believe the Stimulus has helped in a lot of ways as I have stated but I felt it had and has too many pet projects that do not create jobs being funded in it. I have sent numerous emails to both Warner and Webb expressing that opinion. I feel funds should be reallocated to free up credit for small business loans and tax credits for companies who hire FT employees over the next 12 months.
But he didn’t create the mess we are in, he is trying to fix it and mistakes have and will be made in that effort, no one and no administration regardless of party is perfect. I also don’t expect him to fix something in 10 months in office that took about a decade to break.
This is getting funnier by the day…watching all these wrongwingers having their meltdowns. Consider this quote from gqrich,“On to the upcoming election, I have no doubt that McDonnell will win, however I won’t be voting for the Pat Robertson clone with his (LOL) 8 yr plan, AHHHAHH.“ Hummm, I wonder who ggrich voted for last November, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright clone with his “Hope” and “Change” plan? (How’s that working out for ya, BTW?)
And then vamama keeps crying about the mess that poor litle Obama “inherited”. Obama didn’t “inherit” anything..he wanted it, he campaigned for it, he worked for it, he TOOK it. So after almost 11 months, don’t you people think it’s time to quit excusing Obama’s do nothing Presidency and start holding him responsible for a few things?
