A Dinwiddie County jury today recommended a life sentence for Julie E. Futrell, who earlier this afternoon was convicted of first-degree murder in the November 2006 stabbing death of her 6-year-old son.

The jury deliberated for about 15 minutes before coming back with their sentence. The sentence is in line with what prosecutors sought. Formal sentencing for Futrell, 36, will be at a hearing in May.

Earlier, the jury deliberated a little more than an hour before returning a guilty verdict at about 3 p.m. in Dinwiddie Circuit Court.

The decision capped a two-day trial that included the testimony of 20 witnesses -- 15 for the prosecution.
