State Fair organizers look to improve parking

Now that the State Fair of Virginia has concluded its 11-day run at its new location in Caroline County, organizers are looking at ways to improve the event for next year -- especially the parking.

At times, the entrance to The Meadow Event Park in Doswell was a scene of gridlock and hourlong waits. Access to the parking areas at the State Fair site was from one entrance off state Route 30.

"We take a critical eye to everything. We want everyone to have a good experience," said State Fair spokesman Jay Lugar. "It does us no good if people are stuck in traffic."

The fair opened Sept. 24, marking the first major event at The Meadow Event Park, and ended Sunday. The fair moved to Caroline after a 63-year run at the Richmond Raceway Complex in Henrico County.

The Meadow Event Park has 5,000 more parking spaces than the raceway location, but fair organizers never got to do a dry run of the parking setup to make sure it would run smoothly.

Kevin Anderson said he drove to the State Fair from King George County on Sept. 27 and spent more than an hour waiting for a parking spot. He said problems began not on state Route 30 but once cars merged from six lanes to one at the entrance to the parking areas after paying the $5 parking fee, creating a bottleneck. Parking was free when the fair was at the raceway.

On Sunday, during the final day of the State Fair, cars merged into two lanes -- one to the left and one to the right -- to go to parking lots in different areas of the 348-acre Meadow Event Park.

The previous Sunday, it took Anderson more than an hour to park after paying to do so.

"While it was going on, we were having second thoughts about if we should have gone somewhere else, but once we got inside, we didn't even think about [the parking problems]," Anderson said. "It was just a complete debacle all the way around with the parking, but inside [the fair] was nice, much better than it was at [the raceway]."

A couple of miles down the road at Kings Dominion, the parking-related gridlock at the State Fair wasn't an issue, said John Pagel, the amusement park's marketing manager.

However, on Saturday night, the State Fair used a grassy field at Kings Dominion for overflow parking. The fair extended its hours by an hour that night to counteract the long parking waits.

"If you couldn't get in for an hour, hopefully we gave you that hour back," Lugar said. "We were trying to do the right thing. We've never extended the hours during the fair."

Pagel said Kings Dominion officials plan to offer continued assistance to their State Fair neighbors to make parking and guest transportation smoother next year.

Lugar said the fair's new $5 parking fee covers operational expenses and pays for parking attendants. The State Fair contracts with Standard Parking, a national provider of parking facility management services.

To offset that added fee, Lugar said, the State Fair made all the concerts free with paid admission. In the past, he said, there was a charge of $10 for the concerts.

"When people got in, I think they had a great experience. We know we have to get them in a little better, and we're going to work like heck to make sure that happens," he said.

I really can’t believe all this whining!  I think the new location is a wonderful change.  Sure there were some kinks to work out, but every new venue has those.  They can be fixed for next year.  As for the price, I don’t see where it is that bad.  It’s still cheaper than a day at Kings Dominion, and there you pay $10 to park and you still have to walk through the parking lot to the gate and walk all over big ole Kings Dominion.  Maybe we should have personalized golf carts to take all you “me first” people around.

Oh yea,the cost, you charge a additional $5.00 because its the weekend. That was a slap in the face.
After having to walk a mile to grt in then walk the fair,to find out the animal exibits were another hike up the hill, this was heartbreaking to see the older adults having to hike it in the heat.

State Fair was a bust for our family this year. With three children, the cost was just prohibitive and the parking fee was the final straw. Paying to wait in line for over an hour and parking in a cow field far away is just over the line. My suggestion would be to make this event more accessible, both economically and logistically, for more citizens. We won’t return until there are some major changes in admission prices and you may want to add some special prices so elementary age children to enjoy the fair. In one word, overpriced.

Hi, I thought cost was high. I think you should look at one price for entrance and no rides but to enter and ride it was around $30.00. The walking was too much please inprove parking if you want to go to rides you should be able to park on that side. We got ready to leave and was parked in North Dallas Forty lot with a baby stroller it was hard to move through hrass and ruts. I know it was first year and I’m hoping that suggestions will help not hender your progress.

In my travel to go home Friday night (7:30 p.m.-10/2) I encountered a backup just past Ashland/Hanover Exit on 95 N.  I thought there was an accident on 95.  But NOOOO, it was that the State Fair and Kings Dominion (Halloween Haunt) were open simultaneously.  Not a good situation and something to keep in mind next year. I simply wanted to continue straight on Rt. 30 to King William and it took me 1 hr. and 10 minutes to get home when it usually only takes 45 minutes.  There were also rude drivers in the lane I was in hoping to butt in front of the others in the far right lane to park at the fair as they got closer to the entrance gate.  Meaning, they didn’t want to wait their turn like the others.  That needs to be corrected as well. I understand it was a first for this location, but more thought should have been put into the access and exit situation. It was obvious to me in my daily travel past the Meadow Park the last 2 years that this was a much hurried project and perhaps it should have been postponed until 2010. I hope this years situation will not curtail the high numbers from attendance next year.  Well, that is if they fix the problem. I did attend the fair, but on 9/27 when the number in attendance was a bit smaller.  Access and exiting was still an effort but tolerable.

Coming in around 1:00 p.m. was easy, but leaving the parking by 5:00 took over one and a half hours. The attendants around lot 56 were no help, and all they said was turn around and go out another gate.
They stood there waving there arms for traffic to come in, and still waved for traffic to move as it was gridlocked.
There were no trams in site and no idea that the trams were even running.
People with baby’s had to push the strollers thru the ruff parking area, for a mile to get to the fair.I saw handicapped people having to park down in area 56 which almost as far away as you can get. Really poor management in the parking department. This is enough that I dont want to come back next year.
