UPDATE: Richmond Fair could start July 24 or July 31

Now, organizers of the Richmond Fair say it's on -- if plans fall into place. It could begin as early as next Friday, July 24, or it could begin Friday, July 31, they say. It would run for 10 days.

Earlier today, the president of the company bringing a fair to The Diamond said the fair would not take place this Sunday, July 19, because his organization had not gotten the necessary permits from the Richmond Police Department.

However, Mark Lovell, president of Universal Fairs Inc., said this afternoon that the dates the fair will take place have been pushed back to two possibilities.

For details, see tomorrow's Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Real Fairs take months to prepared for.  Just ask anyone at any of the neighboring county fairs.  I suspect this event will be nothing more than a parking lot carnival that could not find any place to set up.

A real Fair involves the community from the beginning and benefits the community.  The police department is just having them jump through some hoops.  It is no worse than the health department, ride inspectors or tax department jump through.

Hey they are paying the RMA $20,000 so may the tolls will come down or some pot holes will be patched.

My god, can anyone in this town get anything done??? If you’re going to have something like a city fair, get your act together. What a joke!

This doesn’t appear to be an upscale operation (a previous article indicated that the owner DROVE from Memphis to Richmond).  Let’s hope that if they are as bad as some have made them out to be, that they will lose their shirts here and never have a second “Richmond Fair”.  Time will tell.

Another lesson for anyone who wants to provide a service and earn a living;  Stay away from the Richmond City government.

RTD please give us the reason(s) it can not take place before the opinions of inept officials start to come forth. I know the fair was to be held at the Diamond but the fair is not baseball. It appears it is extremely difficult or impossible anything can be worked out in Richmond.

What kind of organization doesn’t bother with something basic like a permit until the last minute?  To be honest, we are probably better off that this traveling “medicine man” show didn’t come here.  There are county fairs all around the metro area.. Plus the REAL state fair in the fall.. We are close drives to both Bush Gardens and Kings Dominion..This outfit doesn’t sound like it was too reputable.

There has to be some reason why both Henrico and the city do not want this company to come here and do the fair.  Security cannot be the real reason because that was ‘resolved’ 2 days ago.
