Henrico police have charged a county man with driving under the influence following a two-car collision that killed one man and sent nine others to area hospitals.

The collision Saturday night at 9:40 p.m. occurred after an eastbound Oldsmobile on Williamsburg Road swerved to avoid a motorscooter pulling away from Klockner Drive. The Oldsmobile driven by Jerome J. Lewis, 25, of the 2200 block of Brockway Lane east of Glenwood Golf Club, crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming SUV, authorities said.

Lewis was charged with driving under the influence. The collision, which caused major damage to both vehicles, resulted in the death of Lester Walker Jr., 30, of Richmond. Walker was a passenger in the Oldsmobile.

Police said the 10 people in the two vehicles all were transported to local hospitals. Two people who were in critical condition are now in serious but stable condition, according to police.

My heart aches for the family of Mr. Walker. His step daughter is in my child’s’ class. She is a brave little girl. I pray for ALL those involved and their families. The scooter driver should turn him/herself in and take their punishment. For God sees all and that person will pay someday.

As usual, the “under the influence” had little to do with this crash, but it will be harped on by everyone as the reason for it.  The scooter driver caused this crash.

Traffic fatalities happen all the time with sober drivers.  Three times as much as traffic fatalities involving alcohol.  But most of those sober drivers have no consequences and it was just an “unfortunate accident” that killed the people in those cases.  Some people are worse drivers sober than many of the DUI drivers on the road.

My condolences to the victims in this accident, but blame the scooter driver.

When are we going to get someone in office with at least just a tad of common sense to know that those damned little scooters running around everywhere are nothing but an accident waiting to happen!  How many more lives must be lost because of them before they will wake up and realize that they SHOULD NOT be on the roads!!  Look at what has happened here in this case because of one!!

When are people going to learn that being under the influence and driving do not mix?

My condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

And my hopes that those injured recover soon.
