Henrico County police have charged a county man with driving under the influence after a two-car collision that killed one man and sent nine others to area hospitals.

The collision Saturday at 9:40 p.m. occurred after an eastbound car on Williamsburg Road swerved to avoid a motor scooter pulling away from Klockner Drive. The car, driven by Jerome J. Lewis, 25, of the 2200 block of Brockway Lane, crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

Lewis was charged with driving under the influence. The collision, which caused major damage to both vehicles, resulted in the death of Lester Walker Jr., 30, of Richmond. Walker was a passenger in the car.

Police said the 10 people in the two vehicles all were transported to local hospitals. Two people who were in critical condition are now in serious but stable condition, according to police.
