Here's a snapshot of emergency calls during the week of May 11-18, as reported by Metro Richmond fire departments.
RICHMOND
Fire Calls: 152 Emergency Medical Calls: 381 EMS: Cardiac arrests (4), chest pain (57), breathing problems (123), shooting (2), stabbing (3), unconsciousness (73).
Significant Events:
- Fire: 1400 block of Yale Avenue, house. Under investigation. Fire: 3000 block of Grayland Avenue, attic. Under investigation. Fire: 2000 block of Creighton Road, apartment building. Under investigation.
CHESTERFIELD
Fire Calls: 384 Emergency Medical Calls: 535
Significant Events: Fire: 9700 block of Kathleen Drive, two-story single-family dwelling. Fire resulted from cooking oil that was being heated and left unattended in the kitchen.
HENRICO
Fire Calls: 145 Emergency Medical Calls: 446
Significant Events: Fire: 100 block of Eisenhower Drive, detached garage. No injuries; under investigation. Fire: 8900 block of Telegraph Road, single-family dwelling. Significant fire and smoke damage. No injuries; under investigation.
HANOVER
Fire Calls: 133 Emergency Medical Calls: 175 EMS: Cardiac arrests (2), diabetic emergencies (3).
Significant Events: Hazardous Materials: 200 block of Haley Road; freon leak.
FIRE SAFETY
Never borrow a battery from a smoke alarm. Smoke alarms can't warn of a fire if batteries are missing or have been disconnected.
The leading cause of fires in the home are cooking (which leads to most fires and injuries), heating equipment and electrical. Fires caused by smoking materials and heating equipment are the leading cause of home fire deaths.
Watch what you heat, and always remain in the area where you are cooking.
