Firefighters rescue man dangling from flagpole

Henrico County firefighters have retrieved a man who was dangling from a flagpole at a car dealership on West Broad Street.

The incident was reported to Henrico at 1:46 p.m. Police responded to the incident at the Pearson Chrysler Jeep Mazda dealership at 8250 W. Broad St. just west of Parham Road. Police said the man, whom they identified as Paul Reed, was stuck about 75 feet above the ground.  The pole is about 105 feet tall.

A Henrico fire bucket truck came to the scene to rescue Reed, a contractor who was changing the rope for the flag when he started to fall, according to the dealership.  Reed, who is in his early 70s, has been doing flagpole work all his life.

I’m sure there’s a Youtube video from someone’s cell phone.

105 feet? There is not enough money in the world that could get me to climb a pole that high. I cannot even imagine. I wonder if he will retire after this?

Did the article state the man was an employee of the dealership or affiliated with them in any way or did I happen to miss that?

Kind of a risky publicity stunt.  Isn’t this the same dealership that just bought Haynes Jeep?  Maybe some free press will get the people buying up that leftover inventory.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t end up being some poor car salesman who decided to “end it all” since they couldn’t make any sales.

Every time I pass a dealership, I see a milling group of salespeople an not a customer in sight!  I don’t see it getting any better any time soon.  Even people who might normally be looking at a car because they have the money are probably holding back to make sure whatever they get will have a company to stand behind it in the future.

I wonder what would happen to me if I walked into a dealership with the title to may car tucked in my front pocket?  Probably wouldn’t get out alive..lol (but would have a nice new car to be buried in!)

Poor guy,

Henrico Police will make a circus of this with at least 4 cop cars, a few lane closures, Rescue, fire trucks (plural), maybe a helicopter or two,  etc. Reminds me of the Leave it to Beaver episode where Beaver accidentally fell in the cup of soup billboard and half the town showed up while the fire department and his dad got him out.

Hope he is okay.

See what happens when high pressure sales tactics take a turn for the worse.
