3 juvenile center inmates diagnosed with swine flu
Eleven inmates of Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center in Chesterfield County have been isolated in housing at the facility after three were diagnosed with the new H1N1 swine flu virus.
Two others with flulike symptoms -- one with an underlying health issue -- are being cared for in a central infirmary on the campus, said a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, which operates the state-run facility for juvenile offenders.
"What we are doing right now is trying to do everything we can to limit the exposure residents might have to the illness," said Juvenile Justice spokesman Bruce Twyman.
He said the outbreak occurred in a housing unit with 24 juveniles. The others did not show symptoms and were allowed to remain in the original housing unit.
"For the next seven days we will curtail visitation, working on essential contact only," Twyman said.
