Susan Brown Davis, 59, senior vice president, Community Leadership Initiatives at The Community Foundation Serving Richmond & Central Virginia.

Vital stats:

  • Native of Philadelphia; resident of Richmond
  • Bachelor of science, West Virginia University
  • Directs a $5 million community grant-making program that provides support to more than 200 nonprofit organizations annually. Also works closely with individuals, families and institutional donors who request guidance in achieving their philanthropic goals.

    Philosophy on giving:

"Giving for me is about caring and serving. Giving is not just about money, but about offering one's time and talent.

Giving should generate positive feelings for the individual.

It does for me, whether I'm giving of my time, my expertise or my money. People use the terms 'giving,' 'charity' and 'philanthropy' interchangeably.

I think philanthropy is a more intentional, more structured form of charity.

In working with donors from all income levels, I find it to be most fulfilling when it is done with lots of forethought, matching the donor's values with community needs, and when it provides a sense of accomplishment.

Too often, people give only when asked. There is much more joy to be found when donors initiate their own giving, and that's philanthropy."

    Path to philanthropy:

"It began in earnest in the mid-'80s when I was approached by a neighbor who asked if I would be willing to serve on the board of Virginia League for Planned Parenthood.

It was my first opportunity to volunteer as a board member for an organization whose mission I believed in.

I have since served on the boards of Memorial Child Guidance Clinic (ChildSavers), St. Andrew's School and Fan Free Clinic.

While I work in the field of philanthropy as a professional, it has been my experience in working directly with nonprofits that has informed my philanthropy the most.

For me, board service is one of the highest forms of philanthropy available to donors, and effective board leadership can be one of the most critical success factors for nonprofits."

    Current position:

"Since joining The Community Foundation in 1994 as the third professional staff person, I have had the privilege to be a part of its growth in assets, staff and impact on the community.

Just as I have learned from one of the best, Darcy Oman [the president and CEO of The Community Foundation], I hope I have been able to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with others to position the foundation as a community leader for this and future generations.

One of the key capabilities I've learned as a program officer is to make connections and develop effective partnerships with those who are on the front lines of serving our community's needs.

I never cease to be humbled when I meet those whose days are spent in direct service to others and whose success is often dependent on the support of The Community Foundation and its donors.

My role has provided me the opportunity to educate our donors about the needs in our community and help match their values and interests with those in the community."

    Can anyone become a philanthropist?

    "Absolutely. Jump right in!

Volunteer for a day. Read to a child. Provide a home for an abandoned pet. Feed the homeless. Deliver food to the homebound. Serve on a volunteer board.

None of this requires great wealth, but you are likely to find yourself giving of your time, talent and money.

All it takes is a little commitment, and anyone can make a meaningful contribution."
