Brush fires break out in Goochland

Two brush fires that broke out within a half hour of each other this afternoon kept Goochland County fire crews busy.

The first was reported along the 300 and 400 blocks of West Broad Street (U.S. 250), west of Centreville, at 1:10 p.m. The second started about 1:30 p.m. along Interstate 64 at the Rockville/Manakin Road overpass, said Deputy Fire Chief Eddie Ferguson.

Fire crews from Hanover County assisted in extinguishing the second fire, which spread about 2 miles along I-64 and closed one westbound lane, Ferguson said. West Broad Street was completely shut down for about an hour, but has since reopened.

Both blazes were brought under control within two hours. The cause of each is undetermined, Ferguson said, but they could have been started by sparks from a moving vehicle.
