Obama steps up activity for Deeds; Republicans up big in poll
President Barack Obama’s Oct. 27 appearance on behalf of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds will be at Old Dominion University, his campaign said today.
The president will appear a week before Election Day at ODU’s Ted Constant Center.
Obama will try to reignite the voters who helped him become the first Democratic presidential candidate in 44 years to carry Virginia.
Deeds, meantime, has released a new television ad in which Obama encourages Virginia Democrats to help elect the state senator as governor.
The development came as Public Policy Polling released a survey that shows Republicans leading by double-digits in all three statewide races.
Obama’s comments in the ad come from his Aug. 6 fundraiser with Deeds in Fairfax County.
“I need every one of you to get fired up once again so that we can go towards the future, with Creigh Deeds leading the great commonwealth of Virginia,“ Obama says.
In the new poll, Republican Bob McDonnell leads Deeds 52 percent to 40 percent, up from his 5-point edge three weeks ago.
McDonnell has a huge lead among independents of 60 percent to 31 percent.
The poll found that 56 percent of McDonnell’s supporters are “very excited” about voting this fall, while just 34 percent of Deeds’ backers share that view.
Republicans also continue to lead in the down-ticket contests. In the race for attorney general, state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli, R-Fairfax, leads Del. Steve Shannon, D-Fairfax, 52 percent to 37 percent.
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a Republican who is seeking re-election, leads his Democratic opponent, Jody Wagner, 49 percent to 39 percent.
The pollster surveyed 666 likely Virginia voters from Friday to Monday. The survey’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
Reader Reactions
Oaky 12 Step, using your logic(?), then Obama’s popularity does not equate to his effectiveness, does it? Furthermore my conclusion was based on the premise that if so many more people watch Fox News than any other news outlet, then people must be watching because they trust Fox to be more fair, accurate, and yes, balanced in their reporting. I’m sorry you don’t like the fact that CNN, ABC, NBC, and all the others have turned so many people off with their blatant and un-abashed worship of Obama, but hey, that’s life.
And to wpanak who said, “DandyAndy—has any other news outlet other than Fox news ever sued to assert their first amendment right to report lies as news…“
Yeah, Dan Rather comes to mind. Isn’t he suing CBS for firing him because he lied about the Bush National Guard story? :-) And mrright is correct…if the dailykos is the best you can do to get information, then YOU are the one in need of a HUGE dosage of something.
And finally to AG who said, “So if we want to compare news ratings, we need to compare ALL liberal news outlets to Fox News. You will find the overwhelming majority of news viewers watch liberal news…“
Yep, you’re right…which causes me to wonder why Obama, and all of you, are so worried about some dinky little news program like Fox News? I mean, if they’re so insignificant, then why are you people, including the President of the United States, so obsessed with them? Maybe you people can share some of wpanak’s dosage.
But seriously, what you’re saying makes no sense. It would be like me saying let’s compare all the conservative newspapers to the Washington Post. You’ll find more readers of conservative newspapers than liberal papers.
“no I don’t think it is a “fallacy to equate ratings with fair and balanced reporting”. I think what this means is that more people watch Fox News because they can get away from all the Obama worship that the other news outlets provide.“
All the condescension in the world won’t do much to compensate for the fact that you’re still wrong in your argument. There’s no connection between your premise and your conclusion. That was the absurdity I was pointing out with the Hasselhoff example, an extension of your original argument. It’s fine if you want to assert your opinions as such, but don’t go around touting it as logic.
In regards to news show ratings:
I would like to point out that conservatives claim every news outlet except for Fox is liberal or liberal leaning.
So if we want to compare news ratings, we need to compare ALL liberal news outlets to Fox News. You will find the overwhelming majority of news viewers watch liberal news…
As a side note: isn’t it sad that only one channel is willing to promote conservative propaganda?! It would seem that liberal propaganda is more popular than those crazies at Fox.
AG…SHUT UP !!
Are you the new postings czar.Unconfirmed and unvetted like the rest?
I’ll strongly consider your advice…NOT!!
I think people need to stop confusing news with opinion shows.
Beck, Hannity, & O’Reiley are opinion shows. FoxNews.com is the news. I don’t know the specific name for it on the channel guide, but whatever it is when you turn on the FoxNews channel and they are reporting on on the stories, that’s news. If you want to provide examples of why you think FoxNews lies or is biased, by all means argue your point, let’s debate. But please stop using Beck, Hannity, or O’Reiley as your evidence because your comparing apples to oranges.
Remember nobody said MSNB was biased because of what Keith Olberman said on his opinion show; they were said to be biased because Olberman gave his OPINION on a NEWS show that was supposed to be providing fair and balanced coverage of the presidential election. Understand the difference before you start pulling examples to prove your point.
SO back to my ORIGINAL point is that no ONE source is above reproach.
Certainly not thedailykos.
Reading/viewing liberal outlets reinforces my belief in conservatism.
Does FOX News do that for you libs or do you just hate conservatives as a sport?
mrright,
please do not use “NOT!!“ on this forum…
Thank you,
Times Dispatch Management
DandyAndy—also, I did not point you to articles about other news channels bellyaching about low ratings. I pointed you to lists of articles about bias in Fox reporting. You interpreted that as bellyaching.
mrright—Your citation of the Pew research is also your interpretation. It is not factual because Pew did not assert that a set of facts were true, and then look to see which news outlet had the highest correlation with truth. Pew only tallied the positive/negative valence of each report on Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin.
Just because Fox had a more even ratio of positive/negative reports doesn’t make them more accurate. It could be argued just as convincingly that Fox’s “balanced” reporting is simply a sign of a lack of ability to discern truth, or a strategy of going down the middle of the road for the sake of garnering some favor with whichever candidate is finally elected.
wpanak if you want to be taken seriously I wouldn’t post a link to the dailykos as ‘proof’of ANYTHING.
You’re kidding, right ? LMAO
If your assertion is true, and I doubt it, why don’t you verify with a link to an objective news source like the New York Times or MSNBC?
DandyAndy—has any other news outlet other than Fox news ever sued to assert their first amendment right to report lies as news, and that first amendment rights to mislead the public trump FCC regulatory powers to hold news organizations that hold federal broadcasting licenses to a standard of truth, and trimp the rules that protect whistleblowers who identify issues and report these issues to the FCC?

Fox News is biased not because I say it is biased. Not because other news channels say it is biased.
Fox’s News is biased because it is biased, and their own actions in Florida state court to enforce their right to be biased is sufficient evidence to support this as fact.
Now, you can return to your morning dosage.
