Thieves broke into the Dinwiddie Sporting Goods store Thursday night and stole 12 handguns -- the region's fourth gun-shop heist since March.

The intruders peeled back the exterior siding of the sheet-metal building at 7812 Boydton Plank Road to get inside about 10:30 p.m., tripping an alarm, Dinwiddie Sheriff's Capt. William Knott said.

"From what I understand, it wasn't a big hole, just big enough for a person to squeeze through," Knott said. "They basically went through the insulation and inner wall to get into the building."

The stolen weapons included 9 mm, .40-caliber, .45-caliber and .380-caliber pistols.

"The biggest number taken were 9 mms," Knott said.

With this week's burglary, more than 100 guns have been stolen in the past seven months from shops in Dinwiddie, Hanover County, Colonial Heights and Chesterfield County. The other heists:

  • A June 13 break-in at Greentop Sporting Goods, 10193 Washington Highway in Hanover, where 34 guns were taken.
  • An April 16 break-in at Dance's Sporting Goods, 570 Southpark Blvd. in Colonial Heights, where 30 pistols and four rifles were stolen.
  • A March 20 break-in at Dominion Shooting Range, 106 Turner Road in Chesterfield, where 23 pistols were taken.

Arrests have been made in the Hanover and Colonial Heights cases.
