Group lobbies for universal coverage
HEALTH CARE NOW: Health Insurance Coverage in Virginia Keeps Shrinking as Premiums, Family Costs Continue ClimbingAs the debate intensifies over revamping the U.S. health-care system, Bon Air resident Cindy Greer understands the fear of change.
But as a registered nurse who has worked at a free clinic and as a mother whose son is still recovering from a bad motorcycle wreck last year, Greer has seen the current system's flaws. That's why she plans to travel with other Virginia Organizing Project supporters to Washington tomorrow to rally for universal health coverage.
"We have to go in a different direction. I don't know what that will be," Greer said. "My husband and I have government health care. We have one of the best. Still, we have to provide health care for the 46 million without."
Delegations from 40 states are expected at the rally organized by Health Care for America Now!, a grass-roots coalition of labor and special-interest groups. In Virginia, buses are leaving from Richmond, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Norton and the Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia areas.
Virginia organizers yesterday released a report on the rising cost of health-insurance coverage. "On top of premium costs, there are more and more restrictions on private insurance and higher out-of-pocket costs," said Jill Hanken, staff attorney with the Virginia Poverty Law Center.
Greer said she started working at a free clinic in the early 1990s because she saw so many people without health insurance. More recently, her son Andrew's motorcycle wreck in February 2008 while he was traveling in New Zealand brought the matter closer to home.
Andrew Greer, 27, suffered a leg injury and required multiple surgeries. He had bought insurance to cover his extended trip abroad but didn't tap it until he was able to come home.
"New Zealand has a public health-care system," Andrew Greer said. "They extend that to anyone traveling in the country as far as accidents are concerned. I never saw a bill."
A pilot by training, he said he is unable to work and he knew affording private health insurance was out of the question. Luckily he qualified for Virginia Commonwealth University's Virginia Coordinated Care program for uninsured Richmond-area adults.
"I'm very, very lucky," he said. "With the amazing free care I received in New Zealand, the VCC program helping to reduce medical costs, and an incredible support system of family, I will eventually land on my feet again -- hopefully without an alarming amount of debt.
"With just a few small changes in circumstances, I could be in a very desperate position."

I think it is really simple to implement this. What makes it hard is all the lobbying going on that wants to keep the status quo at the expense of the American people. I’d suggest a simple system of those who want in, agree to be taxed at a higher rate. If you want to opt-out, keep your current plan with the HMO’s. No one is putting a gun to everyone’s head. Yeah, some people would not have income to contribite to the “pot”. But that is part of the porpose of living in a society versus off on your own private island. Sometimes we have to take care of our fellow citizens. Only GREED is getting in the way of this. Every other Western nation has a version of a public option and doctors still live high on the hog and there isn’t protesting in the streets. It is funny how many people from Western countries decline to become US citizens now. They know they have a better life in their own country. People come here just to play with america’s “toys”, like Vegas and NYC or some other spots. They realize this country is no place to live and grow old without a pot to piss in and no safety net.
Without a doubt we need universal health care but everyone should be required to make a co-payment to reduce needless use of medical services (including me who has the finest medical coverage of all with no co-payment—retired military). Somehow, the co-payment should be on a sliding scale based upon ability to pay rather than a fixed fee, but there should be a co-pay requirement to whatever is finally proposed. Surprisingly, I haven’t seen/heard much discussion regarding a co-pay clause in the universal medical proposals…..I do hope it’s part of any package.
Anyone who thinks that universal healthcare will hurt this country is insane. Obama said clearly, “If you like your current plan…keep it”. So if you like over-inflated healthcare costs, you will not be impacted. And if you feel so inclined, pay your doctor directly. No one is taking away your favorite money grubbing doctor or HMO if you don’t want them to.
On the flip side, most of the people who complain are the moderately upper middle class, who *think* that the chickens will never come home to roost for them and why pay for some fat slob who eats McDonalds everyday? These same people who tout that we are destroying America by disrupting the free market and socializing medicine are hypocrites because they are un-American themselves, ignoring the values we *supposedly* promote of helping each other, being compassionate, sharing, giving, yada yada…
We are the most selfish society in the West as we only care when it impacts us personally, or our pocketbooks. Everyone else…that’s their problem
I have the finest insurance coverage there is, and it is managed by the most unethical money grabbing company in the world. They lie, intentionally delay, deny benefits without cause, put-off, and do anything possible to squirm out of their contractual obligations. After all, they lose nothing if someone just gives up and pays the claims for themselves. They mislead what they say they pay on their part and give kickbacks under the names of rebates and awards to those who should be providing medical service. They will put you on hold forever, hoping you will just give up. They fail to mail cards you need to prove you have insurance coverage before you can get medical treatment, and fail to mail any explanation to you about your claims. All, for services for which they receive huge amounts of money. This is especially true during the last two months of a year, where if they can delay approval until the next calendar year, another deductible will have to be paid! They lie on the phone about what they will pay for prescriptions versus a drugstore, then make legal threats to get their inflated prices. The employers, the doctors, the hospitals, and insurance companies are all in cahoots, and nationalization of this crooked mess is what they deserve. There’s one price for work company supported policy premiums, yet another close to half of that amount for non-company supported premiums. Really? So, the company shows that they are paying half of the premiums, and the employee pays the other half, and that “half” amounts to the same amount of “full” non-company premiums! Look at the doctor and hospital bills for amount charged and insurance agreed to fees for real corruption! It’s your money or your life! They just as soon have a gun pointed to your head, and they use it to financially ruin anyone. Sure, you hear how much they donate to those who can’t afford to pay, but that’s only because those folks have already had all that they had taken from them for their medical bills and there’s nothing else to take so they write-off those over-inflated non-insurance fees as bad-debt.
SINGLE PAYER NOW!
Greens call for new GAO, Congressional Budget Office studies on Single-Payer health care
The insurance companies are mobilizing to fight against universal coverage with fear ads. Who can blame them, they have made a ton of money on the backs of citizens. We are the only industrial country in the world w/o health care, 44 million and growing. Will there be some flaws, sure in the beginning until the system is worked out. In the long run this will help our country both in industry and socially. Our health care system is a mess and needs changing.

You better wake up and smell the roses, we do this and it will run the private sector out of business and once again the government will take over and run(ruin) our lives with universal healthcare. I will be at WRIC protesting against this monster.
