Henrico School Board to consider teacher dress code

Henrico County teachers may have to watch what they wear to work this fall.

After adopting a countywide dress code for students last month, the School Board now is turning its attention to staff.

Athletic shoes, flip-flops, jeans, tattoos and facial jewelry would be taboo for teachers in most cases under a draft policy to be discussed today at a School Board work session at the Glen Echo Building, 3810 Nine Mile Road.

The board is likely to recommend revisions today based on feedback from an employee survey. The revised policy then will be posted for public comment before the board considers adopting it in August.

Teachers and other staff supported the proposal in a survey from June 24 to July 7. Of more than 6,000 employees contacted, more than 2,000 responded. More than half of the respondents said the draft policy was acceptable.

As drafted, the "Professional Attire Expectations" would require staff to follow the student dress code, which prohibits tight and revealing clothing, among other items.

Other restrictions include a ban on T-shirts or sweatshirts, even on casual Fridays, unless they are school-affiliated.

In other school districts in the Richmond area, the teacher dress code is more general.

Hanover County, for instance, requires attire that reflects the professional position of the employee, is appropriate to the assignment of the employee, and is commonly accepted in the community.

In Richmond, each school is responsible for its own dress code. School officials said they are considering a citywide code.

Kent Willis, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, said Henrico could run into First Amendment issues if it allows some messages but not others on clothing.

"The more difficult issue is the question of how far the government can go to invade the personal space of employees," he said.

Two parents who e-mailed the Richmond Times-Dispatch said they supported a dress code for teachers but not necessarily all the restrictions in the draft.

The mother of a fifth-grader at Trevvett Elementary School, who asked that her name not be used, said "One of my child's teachers had on pants so tight one year for parent/teacher conferences, it left NOTHING to the imagination, and that's a bit extreme to me"

"I do admit, some of our teachers are not properly dressed all the time," wrote Kathleen Sumler, parent of a middle school student. "But to cut out blue jeans and tennis shoes at school is ridiculous. They are dealing with children. Why should they have to dress up?"

CityCynic… you are incorrect.  Go to the HCPS website, School Board, then BoardDocs.  Listen to the “public forum” section.  Ms. Lucas is, usually, the first speaker.  She proudly boasts that this her her XX number appearance before the board saying the exact same thing.  She has spoken at every single board meeting (note, not public forums on redistricting, but actual monthly meetings) for the past two years (check the minutes).  She’s a joke and makes the real champions for the East End look like a joke right along with her.  I’m not assuming you’re her friend, but you sure seem to have some of the same ‘stinkin thinkin’ that she does.

A person says a lot about how serious they take their job by how they dress for it. If a person is in flip-flops with their shirt tail hanging out while trying to teach a lesson on the Constitution a student will draw conclusions unintended by the teacher.

Several weeks ago we had a major school system redistricting and many comments spoke of how children can adapt and for parents to get over it.  Well if there is a new teacher dress policy or an inforcement of existing policy, I say they can adapt too.

MeeToo: Funny - there was never anyone at a meeting who introduced herself as “TheTruth” or “L”. But if it is indeed the person of whom you speak, rest assured that your ASSUMPTION that she is my friend is ridiculous on a number of levels - if you only knew.

CityCynic- “The Truth’s” real name goes by the intials of K.L.  Yes, she does have a bone to pick as she was fired from HCPS for failing to perform her duties as a teacher and insubordination (ironic isn’t it).  Go read/ listen to the past few years of School Board minutes and you’ll learn all about her.

If you actually have been to board meetings (as you claim on other thread) you’d already be familiar with this woman.  I don’t even live in Henrico and I know.

sped.. in that case, I would imagine that jeans would be appropriate for the physical nature of your job.. in any event, I don’t actually think jeans in themselves are necessarily taboo.. as long as they are not torn.. frayed..distressed and not fitting like a second skin.  It sounds like the schools are trying to put into place a policy that will allow clothing appropriate for the activity..

I never had a problem with clothes fitting, I simply had a problem replacing them when they ripped when I only made $1,200 a pay period.  That money barely covered a house payment and other bills not to mention trying to replace damaged clothing I turned to jeans as they weathered the storm much better than Dockers. (I had a student bite them on the bottom hem, pull and they ripped all the way to my thigh)  I was told jeans weren’t going to be acceptable any longer, that’s when I laughed.

Yes citycynic, I think its just you. Your level of intelligence is obvious.

sped..

it doesn’t cost any more to buy clothes that fit and cover your body than it does to buy beach wear.  Dockers and Jeans can be bought for pretty much the same price tag.

Maybe it’s me but it’s seems like “The Truth” has a score to settle with John Rolfe Middle School. Or maybe it’s just that she/he always got picked last during dodgeball.
