Richmond-area religious leaders, immigrant advocates rally for reform

» 7 Comments | Post a Comment

A group of Richmond-area religious leaders and immigrant advocates today greeted a Florida caravan, then sent them off to a rally tomorrow in Washington.

Virginia immigrant advocates join the Florida caravan and other groups from across the country in a demonstration seeking an overhaul of the current immigration system.

Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill., will unveil the principles of a comprehensive immigration reform bill that he plans to introduce this fall. Other members of Congress also are expected to participate in a vigil at 3 p.m. on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

"We need a bill that says if you come here to hurt our communities, we will not support you; but if you are here to work hard and to make a better life for your family, you will have the opportunity to earn your citizenship," Gutierrez said in a statement. "We need a law that says it is un-American for a mother to be torn from her child, and it is unacceptable to undermine our workforce by driving the most vulnerable among us further into the shadows."

With President Barack Obama's stated commitment to immigration reform, advocates say they expect the issue to become a priority this fall, said Vilma Seymour, president of the local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

For more on yesterday's rally and today's events, see tomorrow's Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Every church I have ever been involved with do donate sizable amounts of money to the poor, mainly in the inner cities.
People contribute out of the goodness of their hearts.
When more money is seized involuntarily from people, the first thing that goes is their charity.
The unnamed church leaders in the article may have cheap parishioners like Joe Biden and Al Gore.

LAWYERSFORPOORA talked about, “U.S.RELIGIOUS LEADERS LOBBYING THE U.S.CONGRESS TO PROVIDE PROPER HEALTH~CARE FOR ALL POORER AMERICANS.“  My question is, why aren’t those religious leaders working to provide that health care?  Why not cut out the middle man (Congress and the US taxpayer) and set up charity hospitals to provide the care that he/she claims is being denied?  There was a time when there were Catholic charity hospitals and nursing orders of nuns staffing them. I’m tired of religious leaders telling government how to spend taxpayer’s money.

drhoagie said, “For the sake of full disclosure, people need to know who these religious leaders are…,“ I agree. Its curious that the RTD failed to identify these local religious leaders.

For the sake of full disclosure, people need to know who these religious leaders are and who the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)are.
One chapter of the LULAC contends the US/Mexican border is not legal.  LULAC supports giving full universal health care to illegal aliens and they are demanding a so called “Fairness Doctrine” (censoring radio only) to silence their critics.
Barack Obama spoke at their national convention.
They have pushed for the Dallas Independent School District to hire illegal immigrants as teachers.  Their Dallas chapter president went as far as to blame America for causing illegal aliens to commit crimes.
It will be interesting to see who these so called “religious leaders” are and investigate if they use their pulpits for political campaigning.  It will be interesting to see which of these so called “religious leaders” will lose their tax exempt status.
You can’t tell the players without a program people.

I believe illegal immigrants can contract contagious infections just like anyone else and should receive the health care they need in the US if they are sick.

Most of us are descendants of immigrants, and the country has benefited from LEGAL immigration.

In no circumstances, however, should the United States alter its immigration policy to reward those who come here illegally. On the contrary, illegal immigrants, like anyone else who has violated our laws, should be identified, arrested, prosecuted, and if found guilty, punished according to the provisions of our laws.

I have no sympathy for anyone who knowing enters the United States illegally.

There must be no selective enforcement of any of our leaws.
