A Richmond police officer and another driver were injured in a three-vehicle crash this morning at Bells Road and Jefferson Davis Highway.
The officer and the other injured driver were put on stretchers and taken by ambulance from the scene of the crash, which was reported shortly after 7:15 a.m. just west of the Philip Morris USA production facility at Interstate 95 and Bells Road.
Authorities said neither appeared to be seriously injured.
They said the officer was responding to another wreck on nearby Commerce Road, on the east side of the Philip Morris campus, when the accident occurred.
Chesterfield County resident Marcus Nowell said he was sitting in his black Lexus sedan in the left turn lane of westbound Bells Road, waiting to turn south on Jeff Davis, when a black Jeep “came out of nowhere” on northbound Jeff Davis.
The Jeep smashed into the police cruiser, which was crossing Bells Road eastbound, and spun the cruiser into Nowell’s car, he said.
The cruiser had its emergency blue lights and siren activated at the time, Nowell said.
Nowell, who was not injured, said the Jeep driver never appeared to slow at the intersection.
The Jeep and the police cruiser were extensively damaged, while damage to the Lexus appeared less significant.
Shortly after the crash, police closed Bells Road westbound between Lynnhaven Avenue and Jefferson Davis while they investigated.

Joey from Charlotte writes, “I live in Charlotte NC and if I was to hear that people like you all in Richmond argue about every little thing I would leave in a heart beat.[/]
But we DON’T argue whether Heinz ketchup is better than Hunt’s, the subject of most debate club challenges in Charlotte. BTW, what is a resident of Charlotte called? “Charlotean”
With all the foolish posts here i believe this accident caused more injuries then expected ,Brain Trauma .
Joey…thank you soooo much for taking that bum Monroe and embracing him as your chief of police. he was a fisgrace to the city of Richmond and we were worried we wouldn’t find anyone else stupid enough to accept his bogus degree and take him off our hands. I see that some of you down there questioned his degree and he caught so much heat he told the city council he was going to give it back and earn another degree in the proper fashion. Of course he never did which shows his lack of integrity, either that or his asst. chief that he takes with him job to job finally told him he wouldn’t do his homework anymore. Anyway, thank you again…and thank the great state of NC for being even less educated than Rodney Monroe…otherwise we might still have him.
Yo Joey! I guess that is why “Charlotte NC” got our old re-re police chief… Heck he was the police chief and lied about his degree!!! And yall just ate him up, hope he helps turn Charlotte into more of a dump than it already is!!!! So hope on back to Charlotte and mind your own business! Thanks don’t come again!
IF you people that live in Richmond argue about stuff like this than I am sorry to say you all really need to get a life. I live in Charlotte NC and if I was to hear that people like you all in Richmond argue about every little thing I would leave in a heart beat. No wonder we steal every opportunity from Richmond.
In regards to respecting the police. You have the right to be handcuffed, placed into a police vehicle and transported to the lockup. What ever happens, in between, is between you and the police. There after you have the right to appear for bond if it is determined appropriate and at some point to appear before a judicial officer for adjudication.
Wow, how in the world did this article turn into an argument??? Hope all are well and happy no one was seriously injured.
Typical Richmond Driver. Oh, behind me it’s an ambulance with his lights and siren on. He can wait behind me though, I’m late for my beauty appointment.
In response to MaiTai: Allow me to introduce myself. I am a Libertarian—a paranoid whack-job who believes the cops are up to no good at all times. I smoke pot 24/7. Now tell me, do I have to respect the police, as you say? Am I bound to get out of the way of their blue lights & jackboots?
to dogtown—It is just as important for the police to respond to accidents with lights and sirens activated. They are more likely to be closer to the accident than fire or rescue personnel and can update them on injury status and/or provide basic medical attention to the injured. They can also manage traffic so that another accident does not happen and/or clear the roadway so that traffic moves freely and the fire/rescue vehicles can get to the scene more quickly. How many times have we read people complain they see the police speeding down the roadway with not lights or sirens on and people believe they are just breaking the law for no reason. It’s darned if you do, darned if you don’t.
