Richmond issues shigellosis update

-- The Richmond City Health District says the shigellosis outbreak is continuing to impact the city and the region, but the infection rate seems to be decreasing.

Sixty-one cases affecting city residents have been reported, including 16 new cases since Dec. 18. Those affected include four new day-care centers in the city and two new schools.

Although the city is seeing new cases, it appears the infection rate is decreasing after two months of tracking the outbreak, said Dr. Donald Stern, the health district's director.

Stern asked the public to continue prevention practices to control the spread of shigellosis, a bacterial infection affecting the intestinal tract. Symptoms may include fever, vomiting and diarrhea with traces of blood or mucus in the stool.

Prevention practices include proper washing of hands before handling food and after using the bathroom. Parents, schools and day-care centers should exclude children who are sick, especially those with diarrhea, from attending school.

Frequent sanitizing of surfaces at schools and child-care settings is also important, and symptomatic children should be seen by a doctor.

I’ve got to agree with suzn123… many grownups don’t even wash their hands.  It’s disgusting!  Maybe they need to be told that “you can’t see germs” just like you have to tell children.

This is one reason diseases spread so fast.  Hand washing is such a simple, inexpensive way to prevent disease and the spread of disease. It would save us a LOT of money in health care costs if everyone just took a minute and washed their hands.

The sad thing about this sickness is hand washing!! Parents today do not stress the importance of hygiene to children like they should.  I was in a public restroom a few weeks ago and a girl about 4 or so came out of a stall while I was washing my hands and I asked her if she needed help to wash her hands and she looked at me like I was crazy and said she doesn’t wash her hands unless they are dirty!!  Her father was standing outside waiting for her and I said something to him, who in turn also gave me a funny look. I wonder where she gets that from?
