Chesterfield County courts will have two new judges May 1.

John V. Cogbill III, managing director of the Richmond office of McGuireWoods, has been elected to Chesterfield Circuit Court.

He replaces Judge Cleo E. Powell, who was elected to the Virginia Court of Appeals.

Cogbill recently resigned as chairman of the National Capitol Planning Commission. He specializes in real estate law.

The General Assembly also elected Pamela Evans, now a commissioner of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, to a General District Court judgeship. She will replace Judge Robert D. Laney, who is retiring.
