After twice beating breast cancer, Katherine "Kate" Talmage Homan, a 44-year-old mother of four from Hanover County, succumbed last week to lung cancer.
Mrs. Homan was featured in the Richmond Times-Dispatch last month when a pink limousine came from Virginia Beach to take her family out for a night on the town. Her husband, John, said the outing was the last time Kate was able to leave her bedroom. She died Sept. 3.
Generosity was a recurring theme in Mrs. Homan's final months, as friends and neighbors rallied around the family. In response to the article and video online at TimesDispatch.com, dozens of readers called offering to help the family enjoy their time together. A trip to Disney World, a week at a beach house and donations to the children's college fund were among the offers.
"She never understood the fuss about her," John Homan said. "That was just like her, always thinking of others and not wanting any attention on herself, never realizing how special she really was."
Knowing nothing could be done, Mrs. Homan abandoned chemotherapy months ago to spend time with her children.
"I was so beaten down, we thought, since we know where this is going, why not just have good days and comfortable time with the family?" she said last month.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Homan is survived by three daughters, Emma, Leah and Frances; a son, Jesse; her parents, Leon and Barbara Talmage; a sister, Susan Talmage; and a brother, David Talmage.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at New Hanover Presbyterian Church, 10058 Chamberlayne Road, Mechanicsville.

May GOD BLESS HER SOUL!!!!!!!!!
I had tears in my eyes watching the video.
God bless Kate and her family. Such a heartwarming story. I lost my mother last year following 2 different cancers that were in remission, then being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which ultimately was the end for her. However, unlike my mother, Kate has 3 young children who are now motherless.
Appreciate life and each other while you can. Life is too short.
