While I am not inclined to defend Councilman Jewell if he was driving intoxicated, we do seem willing to overlook similar offenses by corporate CEO’s and others in leadership positions outside government.
tbone, i see your point.
Melissa804,
Where will you and your family be tonight? I’ll make sure to take that route on my way home from Capital Ale. Maybe I’ll meet you at an intersection.
So with a conviction, will anything Marty has unreasonably condoned in the past now be more scrutinized since police officials have said that they will only pursue questionably illegal activities at the behest of a councilperson?
Skate? A first offense DUI, I am sure will be the standard sentence. You can not be that nieve to believe a judge who sentences 20 people a week for DUI, based on Mandatory guidelines, would change the sentence for a measily council member. Mai-Tai, I think the officer who arrested him, probably didn’t have the “gonzo” NOT to arrest him, even if he was borderline, because people on here would then be criticizing the police for giving special treatment.
Mai Tai - would your family members be saying the same thing if he had hit and killed you early this morning? I feel like I keep reading your comments about officials and police that shouldn’t be charged with DUI’s and you just seem pretty ignorant to me. You’ve obviously never been affected personaly. I bet you are out there on the roads drunk pretty often? I have done plenty of community service in Richmond. Does that mean I’m exempt from any laws?
It’s unfortunte but I always see personally that cops and high ranking officials seem to think that because of their job title, they are allowed to drink and drive. I have seen it personally with too many cops. They are above the law I guess?
I don’t care who you are. Your job title doesn’t make you or anyone around you invincible. Thank god he didn’t kill anyone.
Scott, you think Councilman Jewell should resign because his nephew was arrested? Give me a break.
If you’re opposed to Mr. Jewell over development issues, stick to the high ground instead of gloating over his personal travails or those of his family.
Hey Marty, where were you last night?
Lemme guess, at the “restaurant” which never has food, the place where you permit them to play loud music until all hours of the morning despite 2+ years of area neighborhood associations, homeowners, tenants and police requests to you asking kindly for that “catering” business to at least act more considerate towards its neighbors and at best and most reasonable to comply with the law?
That question as to where you were last night may never be answered but I have to wonder if found guilty as charged, will you skate?
Magic 8 ball says most likely.
I’m interested to know who had the gonzo to arrest him. No, he should not drive drunk. Yes, he has exhibited bad behavior at times. Yet, he has also helped make positive changes in the City.
As long as we’re running out city elected officials for the sins of their sons and daughters, here’s another one. And I’ll note, the Rev. Mayor’s no saint himself:
