Suspect in Ryan Matko killing held without bond

A defense lawyer was appointed this afternoon for 17-year-old Detavis J. King, who is charged with the Aug. 22, 2007, killing of Ryan Matko in Chesterfield County.

Matko was a 16-year-old student at Thomas Dale High School and the son of a Richmond cold-case homicide detective when he was killed.

King is charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony. He appeared for a pre-trial hearing in Chesterfield Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court via videoconference from the Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Home.

He was ordered held without bond in the Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Home. Neither of his parents attended the hearing.

Judge Lynn S. Brice appointed Carey Bowen as King’s attorney. The prosecution was represented by M. Duncan Minton Jr., deputy Chesterfield commonwealth’s attorney.

Bowen agreed that the prosecution had enough evidence to establish probable cause sufficient to hold King for trial. That meant little evidence was presented during the hearing. It was revealed, however, that the weapon suspected of being used in the killing was a .32-caliber Harrington & Richardson revolver.

Due to the budget cuts and to keep any innocent children from suffering anymore educational budget cuts can we execute this guilty murderer instead of keeping him in our prison system at a cost of $50,000+ a year like we did Mr. Bell?  In today’s modern forensic science how much proof does a state need to prove someone guilty beyond a doubt?

To David posting at 3:43pm - 98% probability that the crime gun was stolen.  We’ll see how this turns out, and the source of the gun.

I am very happy that they made an arrest and hope he is tried as an adult and gets the maximum penalty.I coached Ryan in baseball for years and know him and his family well.Neither Ryan or his family deserved to go through this terrible ordeal.I do have to disagree with the comment about who sold king the weapon.Guns dont kill, people do.Maybe HIS parents should be held responsible???????

Parents….. Keep up with your kids and what they are doing. I see more kids these days at this age where the parents just don’t care where there kids are as long as they are out of their hair!! A lot of times these troubled kids just need love and attention.

Okay, now let’s find out where a 15 year old got a gun and let’s prosecute that person, and then follow the chain to the first person who illegally transferred this weapon.
