Charlottesville man left for hike, never returned

WINTERGREEN -- Authorities are searching for a Charlottesville man who was reported missing after leaving his Wintergreen resort home on a hike.
Officials say 45-year-old Michael Comer arrived at his home around noon yesterday and went on a hike. His wife reported him missing when he didn't return by 7:30 p.m.
Wintergreen resort community spokeswoman Dana Quillen says two teams searched for Comer overnight but they were contending with steep terrain and wet ground. She says the Virginia Department of Emergency Management was sending search-and-rescue teams this afternoon to continue the search.
The resort has 30 miles of hiking trails throughout more than 6,000 acres of wooded property. -- The Associated Press

Fearing the worst, let us believe in the most fortunate outcome to a disappearance as described in this story. There are many freak accidents that can happen in the woods while alone and traveling—even for an experienced hiker. Loving the woodlands is not enough, knowing how to survive in them is essential if an accident happens. I hope this person is found alive and able to rejoin his community.
