The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch that covers a wide swath of Virginia -- including the Richmond region -- that remains in effect until 6 p.m.

The watch area extends from Roanoke in the west to the Eastern Shore and from the North Carolina line in the south to King and Queen County.

The watch does not mean a tornado is imminent but that conditions are favorable for the formation of one and that people should be aware of the possibility.
