Richmond police officer hit by car
The driver of a sport-utility vehicle that hit a Richmond police officer this morning was charged with driving under the influence and felony hit and run.
The officer, who was not identified, was dusting a car for fingerprints in the 700 block of N. Harrison St. near Virginia Commonwealth University's Monroe Campus. He was knocked down by the side view mirror of a white 2003 Ford Excursion around 3:45 this morning.
The vehicle kept going but was later stopped at Boulevard and Broad Street, said Richmond police Capt. Linda Samuel.
"The officer was taken over to Retreat Hospital . . . basically just to be checked out," said Samuel. "He'll be released and come back to full duty."
At the time of the incident, the officer was investigating a larceny from a vehicle. "Somebody had gone into vehicle and taken something, and so he was fingerprinting the vehicle," Samuel said.
Police withheld the name of the driver charged in the incident.

when my car was broken into, they offered to take prints, but said it would probably not be effective because a car typically has many prints on it. However, at least in Richmond, they come out to do a report. When my car was stolen in Henrico, I spent thirty minutes on the phone convincing them that I made my car payment and that I did not park in a no parking zone. Then, two hours later, they took a report via telephone. I guess they are too busy tackling people in wheelchairs.
The driver’s name is Joshua Michael Daugherty from Chester VA
Interesting. I have seen cases where someone was picked up for loitering - and his name is on the internet somewhere (check out the lcoal midlothian rag for their police blotter).
j-reb….what does driving an SUV have anything to do with a felony hit-and-run? I guess a Prius owner would never do that.
A cop dusting for prints on a simple auto break-in….that does sound extraordinary. I wonder if there’s more to this or if the robbery victim had some connections in the police dept.
Anyone that wants to comment on any article needs to take a moment to re-read the piece before they post. It would save a lot of arguments here.
“If the cop was not wearing his reflective vest, it is not really the driver’s fault.“
Are you kidding me? dklee, apparently you did not read the first sentence that says the driver was charged with DUI and felony hit and run.
Yeah, you’re absolutely right, the driver should not be held responsible for driving drunk, nearly killing an officer, and fleeing the scene because the officer was not wearing a yellow vest.
Intersting. I had someone hit my brand new 2 week-old car and the police came out and did nothing. No tests of any kind, in no way taking evidence of what may have happened in hopes of capturing the perp. Somehow I feel there’s more to this story. We shall see.
a cop actually doing fingerprinting on a breakin? i had two cars broken in to, and they just took my statement. saying a car breakin is not really worth it.. bastards…
at 3:45 in the morning, if the cop was not wearing his reflective vest, it is not really the driver’s fault.
Yes, obviously only an SUV driver would do something like this!
Give me a break.
One can only suspect the name of the driver charged was not released because the driver is probably a sports or political figure and has not yet paid his bribe.
