Petersburg approves nightclub
PETERSBURG -- A nightclub will open in Petersburg this summer, with the overwhelming approval of city officials.
The City Council on Tuesday night unanimously granted a special permit for the operation of the Miami Café and Lounge, a new establishment at 2733 Park Ave., in the South Crater Road business corridor.
While approving the permit, the council extended the establishment's hours of operation to 1 a.m., changing a condition set by the city's Planning Commission that required the nightclub be open no later than midnight.
Rodrick A. Wimberley, a former Virginia State University student and a Richmond resident, will operate the nightclub and restaurant.
He said he expects the establishment to open this summer and that it will offer jazz, swing, blues, ballroom and Latin music in what he said will be a friendly and diverse environment.
City officials said Tuesday that the club will be a good addition to the city, which has few night entertainment options.
Officials also praised Wimberley's commitment to maintaining a high level of security at the site and enforcing a dress code while offering diverse entertainment.
"You are not only bringing a restaurant to the city," said Vice Mayor Horace Webb, "you are also bringing some culture, some entertainment."
During a public hearing on the issue, residents also spoke in support of the club.
"I am glad to see some interest coming into the city," said city resident Linwood Christian, noting that currently "our teenagers go to other localities" for night entertainment.
Richmond-area nightclubs stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m. as required under state law, but several stay open after that.

Perhaps we are showing our age, my friend. I probably ran into you there so many years ago. But, I’ve grown up, moved on, and no longer have a club-friendly lifestyle. But many of us did at one point, didn’t we? Thanks for the info. Wow, a decade….wow. Now I do really feel a little out of touch and quite frankly, glad to be, however, in the day, you know….
@Opinion8d
The Coppermine has been closed for almost a decade now! lol I guess we are both showing our ages because I used to be there on a regular basis back in 1998 or so!
Is the “Coppermine” gone? I believe that would qualify as a night club. And I must admit, unfortunately, that I made the trek a number of times in my day.
