A raccoon that attacked a dog yesterday in the 5900 block of South Crestwood Avenue in Henrico County was rabid, police said today.

Animal protection officers located the animal and killed it after a neighbor separated the dog from the raccoon and tracked it for several blocks.

The dog has received a booster shot and will be quarantined for 45 days.

Police warned that residents need to call police when an animal is acting strangely and should avoid the possibility of direct contact with any animal that is unfamiliar or behaving oddly.
