Rabid raccoon confirmed in Varina area
Henrico County police said today a rabid raccoon was confirmed in the Varina area.
Officers from the animal protection unit were called on Monday after a resident shot what appeared to be a sick raccoon and placed it in a plastic bag.
The carcass was tested because it had been handled, and was confirmed positive for rabies yesterday.
Police said the county Health Department was notified so it could contact the resident and determine medical treatment.
Authorities said this was the 14th confirmed rabies case in Henrico this year.
Henrico reminded residents that if they must handle a carcass to use rubber gloves or a plastic bag to prevent exposure to rabies.

Well this changes dinner plans. Does anyone know what might a good substitute for raccoon?
Ingredients:
1 Raccoon, cleaned
4 Carrots, chopped
3 Potatoes, chopped
2 Stalks of celery, chopped
1 Bag of frozen mixed vegetables
1 16 oz. can stewed tomatoes
Your favorite stew seasonings
Directions:
Remove glands and as much fat as you can from raccoon. Parboil until done, skimming fat off water as it rises to the top. Remove raccoon and let cool. De-bone meat and hold aside.
Add carrots, potatoes, celery, mixed vegetables and canned tomatoes to the pot. Add meat to pot. Add seasonings. Keep at a low simmer until ready to serve. For a thicker stew, add flour mix with cold water before serving, stir until thickened.

ahhhh, another brilliant TD story. Varina is bigger than all of the rest of henrico, so it might be a little heplpul to say exactly WHERE in varinia it was located. hmmm?
