Virginia Beach Regent University is naming Pat Robertson's replacement as president of the Virginia Beach school he founded in 1978. The school announced yesterday that Carlos Campo, who has been the university's vice president of academic affairs since 2008, will assume the post in August. Robertson will continue to serve as chancellor and a member of the board of trustees. The school is known for its Christian perspective and has more than 4,500 students studying on campus and online. Robertson also founded the Christian Broadcasting Network, which broadcasts his television show "The 700 Club."
Bedford The financially troubled National D-Day Memorial will lay off nearly half its staff. The president of the foundation that runs the memorial, William McIntosh, said yesterday that 11 of the 24 fulland part-time staff members will be laid off Dec. 1. He said the layoffs come as the outdoor museum enters the slowest time of the year, and it may only be open by appointment. McIntosh has said the memorial was on the verge of closing because donations are down. The National Park Service is studying whether the memorial can be transferred to the agency.
Norfolk A former Virginia Beach police officer has pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge, admitting that he was a key figure in a marriage-fraud case. Andrey Savelyev said yesterday in U.S. District Court that he became an enforcer in a sham marriage between a Russian woman and an enlisted Navy man when the sailor became fearful of his own arrest and tried to get a divorce. Savelyev went to the sailor's home in uniform and threatened the man with arrest if he didn't stay married. He also admitted that he used the police department's computer to obtain the sailor's records. He faces up to five years in prison when he's sentenced in March.
Roanoke The parents of a Virginia Tech student missing for more than two weeks have set up a fund for contributions to help in their search for her. A spokeswoman said yesterday that Dan and Gil Harrington are using the donations to print and distribute fliers and other material with a photo and description of Morgan Dana Harrington, 20. The Harringtons distributed 50,000 fliers at Virginia Tech's home football game last week. Morgan Harrington has been missing since Oct. 17 when she became separated from her friends at a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said yesterday that police are still getting leads in the case, but they have slowed down.
