Powhatan Tips and suggestions that will help Powhatan County residents and their families prepare for and survive emergencies will be the focus of a class from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Powhatan County Public Library, 2270 Mann Road, off U.S. 60. The program teaches citizens how to identify hazards, take protective measures for specific hazards, create a family disaster plan, assemble a disaster kit and ultimately recover from a disaster. There is no cost, but the class is limited to the first 30 people to register at , or (804) 768-7292.
Chesterfield Chesterfield County police have arrested a woman after her boyfriend was stabbed in their home Sunday. Jayme M. Williams, 22, of the 7000 block of Wentworth Street, was charged with malicious wounding, police spokeswoman Ann Reid said. Police responded to the home Sunday at 4:13 a.m. to investigate a domestic disturbance, and they found the boyfriend had been stabbed. He was being treated at VCU Medical Center for life-threatening injuries but was in stable condition yesterday afternoon. Williams is being held without bond pending a hearing in Chesterfield Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
Richmond Richmond police are still looking for a man who shot a
woman and a boy with a shotgun in September after a third person surrendered to police yesterday. Chazaray Moseley, 20, had warrants for his arrest on seven felony charges, including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in a felony. His cousin, Ronald G. Moseley, 22, of the 6500 block of Balsam Road, turned himself in to Richmond police yesterday. In the shooting Sept. 27, a woman and a boy were treated after being hit in the legs with birdshot from a single shotgun blast in the 6500 block of Balsam Road. The woman also was hit in one arm, police said. Both cousins left the scene in a gold-colored Kia. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.AROUND THE STATE
King George A two-vehicle crash in King George County on Sunday night killed a woman and injured her two children. Virginia State Police identified the victim as Emily Howell, 34, of the Fredericksburg area. Howell's two children, ages 3 and 5, were taken to Mary Washington Hospital with injuries that state police said were not life-threatening. Police said Michael A. Murphy, 27, of Waldorf, Md., was charged with reckless driving after the crash, which occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at state Route 218 and state Route 694. Police said Howell's car was struck by Murphy's car at the intersection.
Blacksburg Virginia Tech is receiving a $27.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for infectious disease research at its Virginia Bioinformatics Institute. U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-9th, joined university officials yesterday to announce the five-year contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. It's the largest one-time federal award the school has received. School officials say the money will be used to integrate information on pathogens and help researchers around the world analyze genomic, proteomic and other data in infectious disease research.
Hampton Hampton University has crowned its first white Miss HU. The crowning Friday of Nikole Churchill didn't sit well with some on campus at the historically black university, while others celebrated the diversity her selection represents. Mindful of the critics, the senior nursing major wrote a letter to President Barack Obama, inviting him to speak on campus about racial tolerance. Churchill was selected from 10 contestants, and now continues on to the 2010 Miss Virginia pageant. Hampton was established in the years after the Civil War to educate newly freed African-Americans.
