Hopewell The school system's citywide Fine Arts Festival will be held at Hopewell High School, 400 S. Mesa Drive, tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Chesterfield Kathryn S. Kitchen, assistant superintendent for business and finance for Chesterfield County schools, will retire at the
end of the school year. She has been with the system 12 years, and she served as interim superintendent before Marcus J. Newsome was hired in 2006. Her salary is $176,276. After working at Virginia Commonwealth University, she went to the Virginia Department of Education in 1983. She was the division chief of the finance department when she took a job in the Chesterfield school system in 1997. A search for her replacement is under way.Richmond Virginia State Police are advising people to pay no attention to a text message that claims there will be a gang initiation at Wal-Mart stores sometime this week that may involve a shooting or other criminal activity. Police said the message is a hoax.
Henrico The ninth annual model-railroad event at the Virginia Aviation Museum will feature scale layouts including LEGO-sized Richmond sights, workshops and activities for children and adults. Wings'n' Rails, sponsored by the Richmond Freelance and Prototype Model Railroaders Club, runs 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. Hanover Hanover's Global Youth Service Day kickoff will be tomorrow at the Richmond Times-Dispatch facility at Atlee Station from noon to 2 p.m. The event will allow the county's youth to meet groups hosting youth service day projects and conduct miniprojects, sample food and listen to high school bands. The projects will be done April 24-26. About 3,000 youths and adults are expected to participate this year. Chesterfield Learn about the origins of America's first iron-production facility during the Falling Creek Ironworks Archaeology Tour from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow. At Falling Creek Ironworks Park, 6407 Jefferson Davis Highway, visitors will see the remnants of ironworks that occupied the site from 1619 until 1622, as well as a later gristmill. The event will include exhibits of blacksmithing and apothecary, children's games, militia drills and performances by Virginia Indians. Admission is free. For information, visit

Norfolk A shootout with a police officer ended with one man dead and another in custody. Norfolk police spokesman Chris Amos said the officer, who was not identified, was not injured. Police identified the victim as Marlon Sanders, 19, of Norfolk. Sanders' neighbor, Brighton E. Alderman, 18, is charged with malicious wounding, attempted robbery and firearms charges. Amos said the officer was on bicycle patrol when he heard gunshots about 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The officer was confronted by two men and they exchanged gunfire, he said.
Newport News Christopher Newport University says it has received almost 8,300 applications for the fall freshman class -- a record. Last year, the university received 7,900 applications and accepted 1,140 students.
Newport News A 40-year-old Virginia man has been sentenced to 191 years in prison for robbing seven banks at gunpoint. U.S. District Judge Henry Coke Morgan sentenced Hector Javier Caraballo of Newport News yesterday.
