Petersburg St. Joseph School is hosting an open house for prospective pre-K3 through eighth-grade students and their families tomorrow at 1 p.m. The public can meet the faculty, tour the facility and hear about the academic curriculum and religious education program. Henrico Beginning Tuesday, the Henrico County and the Greater Richmond Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition will help lower-income working families apply for tax refunds and the earned-income tax credit. Eligible taxpayers can receive free assistance preparing and filing their income taxes. Free tax preparation and electronic-filing services will be available at two sites in Henrico: from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 27 to April 14 at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays from Feb. 7 to March 14 at the Fairfield Area Library, 1001 N. Hanover The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology will have an open house on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. The school is located at 10002 Learning Lane next to Kersey Creek Elementary School. Parents and students are invited to tour the school and meet instructors. Classes for the 2009-10 school year include automotive and industrial technology, building trades, cosmetology and nail technician, culinary arts and small-engine repair. Chesterfield Chesterfield Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Sweetheart Dance for seniors at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Bensley Community Building. Petersburg The Petersburg School Board will hold its next budget meeting Monday at 6 p.m. at the School Board office, 255 S. East Boulevard. The meeting is open to the public, but no public comments will be taken.

David Gangel has said he will ask the county's Board of Supervisors to maintain the same level of funding as last year. The system is bracing for a loss of at least $1 million in state funds.Cumberland The Planning Commission will hold a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Old Clerk's Office. No public hearing will be held at the meeting.

Lynchburg Two Evington residents have been sentenced for their roles in a credit-card scam. Federal prosecutors say the fraud involved taking legitimate credit-card numbers and encoding them onto blank cards. The cards then were used to buy gas and merchandise. Yesterday, Steve Allen Black, 31, and Ronald Edward Black, 27, each were sentenced in federal court to three years and three months in prison. They each pleaded guilty in July to one count of conspiracy to commit fraud, aggravated identity theft and bank fraud.
