Chesterfield The Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department will offer a beginner target archery course for adults 50 and older Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds Exhibition Building, 10300 Courthouse Road. Skills will include stance, follow-through, form, safety and proper use of equipment. All equipment will be provided. The fee is $12 per person. Cumberland The Cumberland County Planning Commission will hold a workshop today at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Room C8 of the Community Center.
Hanover The Hanover County Registrar's Office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to allow voters to cast absentee ballots. Tomorrow is the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot by mail or e-mail. The deadline to vote by absentee ballot in person is Saturday. Henrico Henrico Area Mental Health and Retardation Services will hold an awards dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Belmont Recreation Center, 1600 Hilliard Road in Henrico County, to recognize 16 area businesses and employers who have made outstanding contributions and provided vocational opportunities for the agency's clients. Hopewell The Hopewell City Council will hold a special work session tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 300 N. Main St. Items on the agenda include a wastewater financing update and a quarterly report on the city budget.
King William The King William County Board of Supervisors will meet today at 7 p.m. in the board meeting room of the administration building, 180 Horse Landing Road. Items on the agenda include an update on the Mount Olive community-improvement project and the regional broadband system.
Louisa The town of Louisa will hold a public hearing today at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at Town Hall, 212 Fredericksburg Ave., to consider a special-use permit to operate a preschool at New Life Community Church, 509 E. Main St.
Petersburg The City of Petersburg Museums' annual "Historic All Hallow's Eve Tours" will take place Saturday in Blandford Cemetery on Crater Road. The focus of the guided walking tours is the history of the cemetery and accounts of some of the permanent residents of Blandford Cemetery, portrayed by costumed interpreters. Event parking will be available at the gravel lot east of the Farmer's Market, next to the McIlwaine House (corner of Cockade Alley and Old Street). The tour begins when participants board the shuttle bus to the cemetery's reception center. After participants' arrival and check-in, the tour guides will meet the groups and proceed to the cemetery for the 60-minute tour. Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear walking shoes. Tickets for the tour are $7 per person for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. Reservations for tour times are required and can be made at the Blandford Church Reception Center, 111 Rochelle Lane. Space is limited. Prince George The Prince George County Board of Supervisors will meet tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the third-floor boardroom of the county administration building, 6602 Courts Drive.

Roanoke The Roanoke Fire-EMS Department is mourning the loss of one if its firefighters, who died Thursday after becoming ill. Capt. Chris Brown, 44, became sick Wednesday morning at the end of his shift at station No. 1. It was discovered later in the day that he had a brain tumor, Chief David Hoback said. Brown had worked for the fire department for more than 15 years.
