Caroline shortfall leads to job cuts, unpaid days off
CAROLINE -- In an attempt to close a $315,000 budget shortfall, Caroline County is eliminating six positions in the Department of Planning and Community Development by March 1.
The move will save the county about $103,000 through June 30, County Administrator Percy Ashcraft said in making the announcement yesterday.
In addition, each county employee will take six unpaid days off between March 1 and June 30 to make up an additional $212,000.
Ashcraft said he didn't expect any additional layoffs or furloughs the remainder of this fiscal year or next year unless the General Assembly orders more cuts in state funds to localities.

Caroline is only $315k over budget? Sounds like they have run a pretty tight ship. Good to see government dealing with the shortfall by tightening their belt - just like the rest of us are forced to do. The City of Richmond and Chesterfield County simply raises taxes.
Now that’s responsible and responsive government.
Compare that to Chesterfield County where ~ 150 employees TAKE MORE THAN $100,000/yr EACH in salaries from county taxpayers ... then there’s ~ 35% MORE in fringes they’re given.
Some of these hacks’ TOTAL comp package exceed $250,000/yr!
Why shouldn’t they ... the County Administrator claims “we’re the wealthiest County” and “what recession? ... we’re immune”!
And the Board of Supervisors stands idly by and accepts this arrogance while residents wishing to flee are locked in owing to a horrible housing market.
