Officials: Alleged Ryan Matko killer had gang ties
Teen charged in Matko's death had gang ties, officials say
A 17-year-old charged with killing Chesterfield County teen Ryan Anthony Matko was affiliated with the notorious Bloods gang at the time of the August 2007 slaying, law-enforcement sources confirmed yesterday.
Detavis J. King's gang affiliation figured into the events leading to Matko's death, but precisely how remained unclear last night. Officially, Chesterfield police would say only that Matko and King knew each other.
"They were not strangers," said police Capt. Robert Skowron, who declined to comment further.
King made his first courtroom appearance yesterday since his arrest Wednesday on first-degree murder and felony firearm charges in the Aug. 22, 2007, slaying of Matko, the 16-year-old son of Richmond homicide cold-case detective Max Matko.
Dressed in a green jumpsuit with white T-shirt, King's image was beamed into a Chesterfield Juvenile and Domestic Relations District courtroom via closed-circuit television from the Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Home. He appeared attentive and answered politely when queried by Judge Lynn S. Brice.
Few details about the killing emerged during yesterday's proceeding after defense attorney Cary B. Bowen, appointed yesterday to represent King, agreed that prosecutor M. Duncan Minton Jr. had sufficient probable cause to move the case forward.
But in reading the arrest warrants, the judge disclosed that the suspected murder weapon was a .32-caliber Harrington & Richardson revolver.
Neither of King's parents attended the hearing, although both apparently were made aware of the time and location, the judge was told yesterday.
Brice ordered King be held without bond pending a preliminary hearing March 17.
Among the law-enforcement officers attending yesterday's hearing was Chesterfield Detective Keith Applewhite, the department's gang expert. But he was not called to testify yesterday and declined to talk after the hearing about what ties King had to the Bloods.
According to a legal source, King was questioned by police soon after Matko's killing, and he remained in the area until he was sent to the Natural Bridge Juvenile Correctional Center for a minor criminal offense. The judge yesterday said King had a prior infraction and was known to the court.
After his release, King went to live with relatives in Giles County in Southwest Virginia. But he recently returned to the Richmond area to find work. He was arrested Wednesday as he was applying for a job near downtown Richmond. He had been living with a sister near Huguenot High School.
Chesterfield schools spokesman Shawn Smith said no one by the name of Detavis King attended county schools this year. But he declined to say whether someone by that name previously was enrolled.
Matko, a Thomas Dale High School student, disappeared sometime after the evening of Aug. 21, when he and his mother, Rose Matko, watched a television crime show together before going to bed. The next day, Matko failed to show up for work at his mother's Wild Rose Café, where he was employed as the chief chef.
Police found Matko's car about 7 p.m. Aug. 23 parked on a dead-end, unpopulated street near Cogbill Road. A K-9 unit immediately tracked Matko's scent from the car to an isolated area in a subdivision under construction near Cogbill and Belmont roads. That's where officers found Ryan's body, with gunshot wounds to his head and back.

i know the truth he was my best friend. and kkt, ooo he has a baby? yea and ryan had family and friends too, but thanks to your little friend we dont have ryan anymore now do we? so all i have to say is if your little friend is so concerned about his child he wouldnt be out doing the things he is doing. i mean…i know for a fact his family dosent lack the resources ofr him to go school…so what his excuse? the excuse is hes pathetic.
obxgirl, first off I have not defended anyone. My point to you was do not pass judgement on someone you don’t know 2cents about. This boy has not even gone to trial yet to see if he is guilty but people have so much to say. Whoever did this crime should have to pay for it and I don’t condone anyone taking anyone else’s life but at the same time I am not going to call names and dog out a person that I know nothing about especially when I don’t know if the child is guilty or not. You know nothing about the case and you know nothing about the parties that have been charged so keep your nasty comments to yourself. What you have read in this newspaper is not the complete story and is not the complete truth and until people realize that they are going to continue to use their simple minds to make dumb comments about people they know absolutely nothing about.
n/a, My concern is with the family who lost their child, I have no sympathy whatsoever for the low life gang member who killed him. Why should I? He’s a worthless piece of garbage…why are you defending someone like that?
To obxgirl—AGAIN how can you pass judgment on someone you don’t know all because of what you read in the newspaper. You are one of the simple people I referred to in my last post. You call this boy a scumbag gangbanger and all you know is what you read. You still don’t know if he did it. You have not read anything about evidence pointing to him all you read was that he was arrested and that he may have had gang ties. The police don’t even know what the in the world they are talking about. If it took them a year to build a case against this boy like you say then why haven’t you heard anymore information about evidence? Can you answer that? Come on now. Think with some common sense. If you are really concerned you would pray for the family that lost their child and you would also pray for a child that has been arrested for this crime. He is not guilty yet so don’t pass judgement on what you don’t know about. What happened to innocent until proven guilty. Can you answer that?
Randy you’ve expressed a number of thoughts that I think are very much to the point. The cottage industry you reference is exemplified by extremist groups of professors within the arts and sciences departments of some of our major universities. Just look at the metanarative that the “group of 88” advanced during the Duke Lacrosse hoax.
One 89, please remember what Benjamin Disraeli said about statistics. Extract domestic violence and drug war killing and you might have something meaningfull.
Well said, Indiangal.
Of course this is tragic for the Matko family. Tragic doesn’t even begin to describe what they have been, are and will go through over the loss of their son.
I am surprised at how many comment posters seem unaware that there are a great many sociopaths that live, walk and plot amongst us. It’s now more “pc” to call them ‘persons with antisocial personality disorder’. These murderers don’t CARE A WIT about what others feel or think; they are only capable of taking care of their own interests, and woe to anyone who gets in their way. So while we rant and rave about ‘how can anyone possibly do this !‘, they are busy plotting the demise of their next victim if it will propel their own agenda. Look around ! Notice ! This is a real and definite condition - human life without ANY CONSCIENCE or ABILITY TO LOVE. For a better explanation, see the book ‘The Sociopath next Door’, where this sociopathic behavior is described as biologically no different than, say, being born with dyslexia or the breast cancer gene - it is a TRAIT, although one we describe as a defect. And clearly, Ryan’s murderer is a defect.
I think the reason it took a year to arrest him is that the police conducted a very thorough investigation. The scumbag gangbanger has been caught and he will now pay for what he did. And the fact that he has a “baby”, who really cares? This piece of trash will spend the rest of his life in prison where he belongs!
n/a i would have to agree with you the newspaper lie about so many things and the police. yall saying some much about diz boy and yall dont know anything. do yall but i do know he has a baby that he needs to be with and time away from him because of what people think they got.if yall dont know the truth then yall shouldnt say anything.
